Are you voting for the party that you're registered for?

First off…I'm going to be very glad when tuesday comes. I'm getting extremely tired of the back and forth on this. We need to just get this over with! It's been like…2 years of campaigning!! I'm very glad it's tomorrow. I'm not going to be able to take much more of this.

I am registered as not being a member of a political party because I don't really believe in having a blanket position that I'd vote for regardless of the individuals running. I much prefer to look at what they believe in and pick the person who most closely matches what my positions on the issues are. (Disclaimer, the following post is probably a little disorganized. Also note, I'm keeping this general. I could go into a long comparison of the two candidates and my own values, but I don't think that would be terribly helpful to anybody at this point. So this is just in general.)

That having been said, this year I'm going to be voting pretty much straight Democrat. The Republicans that are running both nationally and locally have done nothing to show that what they stand for is in any way, shape or form the set of ideas that I want representing me in my government. From Gay Marriage, to health care, to taxes, to abortion…count me out.

And specifically regarding McCain…if the McCain that was running now was the same McCain that was running in 2000, I would be a lot more tempted to vote for him. I LIKED that McCain. But this McCain is not the same guy, no matter what he says. Between 2000 and 2008, he performed a total 180 on almost every major issue. And I don't see that as a problem usually…because I think everyone should be able to change their mind as the situation dictates. Nothing worse than going into an ever changing world with a bunch of ideas that are set in stone. But it was obvious that he was changing his viewpoints in order to appeal more broadly to the republican base and win the nomination in 2008.

Nothing speaks louder to this than his recent attacks on Obama regarding "socialism" and "spreading the wealth" when he himself is on record prior to his reinvention saying that the wealthy can afford to pay a little more in taxes. Which is exactly what Obama is saying now, and what he's being attacked for.

Obama on the other hand, in my opinion has better judgment, and is more willing to hear and consider opposing viewpoints. He also adheres more closely to my idea of what needs to be done to turn this sinking ship of a country around and restore some of that respect we've lost in international communities due to our country's actions. I believe his ideas are more suited to a globally focused, ever changing world. We need somebody right now that's going to think and consider as much input as possible before making a decision, instead of just flying off the handle and going from the gut (See suspension of campaign to rush to washington to help the bailout bill and the Palin VP pick). So that's why I'm voting for him.

But forget my opinion. That's just me. The only wrong opinion is not voting at all because that's the only way our system is going to work. Go vote! I don't care who you vote for…just VOTE.
