Caught In The Whirlwind

Yup. It’s December.
Dec 9th 2009
We’re right in the middle of our first winter storm of the season right now. Snow, wind and sleet/freezing rain later on in the day. Fun! Today was also my first drive to work after moving further away in true winter conditions. We had a smaller event last week, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as the weather we were getting today.
Altogether though, my drive was better than I was expecting it to be. I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that during the hilly bit, a snow plow had just gone through and deposited a fresh coat of sand. Thankfully. I’m not looking forward to the drive home if the freezing rain prediction holds true though.
December also means planning for family gatherings and the dates of them this year have started to firm up. I’ll be busy the 24th through the 26th with Christmas family gatherings which works out fine for me. Going to be at my parents for Christmas Eve and Christmas and then out to one of my Aunts for the gathering for my dad’s side of the family. We might have some people over for Christmas Eve from my mom’s side…possibly. Not quite sure how that’s all going to shake out though.
Lets see, more random stuff. I did some re-measurement yesterday and it actually seems that I’ll be able to fit a new desk into my space in the office after all. Wassy was up there doing work last night so I figured I’d see where my chair would be pushed with her sitting there at her drafting table working and it actually looks like we have more space than I was initially thinking we would have. That always seems to be the case. So perhaps that can be a tax refund expenditure. We’ll see what happens, as I know I’m not getting nearly as much back this year as I have in previous years.
I Could Do Without Winter
Feb 15th 2007
If you live in the Northeastern United States, you probably know what I’m talking about, but we just had our very first major winter storm of the season blow through yesterday. I’m not sure what the official totals were, but I had about a foot of snow on my car when I went to brush it off this morning.
My back also aches from my 20 minute shoveling adventure to clear my porch and apartment steps off yesterday after I got home from work. I took some pictures yesterday, but they all turned out horrible (more horrible than normal in fact), so you’re just going to have to imagine what things looked like.
In addition, I got my car stuck in the driveway this morning, at the end where all the snow plows leave the snow they push off the road. It took 15 minutes and 2 neighbors to push my car out.
The best part of this is…we’re probably getting more lake effect snow tonight. Just what I wanted…more snow.
I’m Freeeee!! Well…Tonight Anyway…

My school, for the first time I can remember, canceled night classes due to the threat of snow.
Usually it takes 2 feet on the roads, no plows, high winds, power outages, ice and perhaps some sort of structure fire on campus in order for them to even consider canceling classes.
I’m not asking questions…I’m just going to go with the flow.
Winter Hates Me
Jan 30th 2007
The snow is out to get me.
We had a lake effect snow warning in effect for yesterday and part of this morning. I was hoping it was going to snow here early enough so that I wouldn’t have to go to class that night, because if there’s one thing worse than driving when the roads are all slick with snow, it’s driving at night with slick roads.
But what actually happened went something like this:
5pm – Leave work to go home and eat dinner. No snow.
5:30pm – Leave house. No snow.
6pm – Arrive at class, snow coming down lightly
7:15pm – The halfway point break in class where the professor says he might let us go early due to the weather
8:00pm – The professor begins the process of finishing out class. He’s about to let us go when some moron asks a question which causes him to launch into a 30 minute response.
8:40pm – Class dismissed. It’s snowing pretty good now, roads are pretty bad. Can’t even see the lanes on two the major highways I use to get home. Don’t even get me started on the back roads
9:20pm – What is normally a 20 minute drive takes 40 minutes. Snow still coming down pretty good when I walk in my front door.
10pm – Snow stops.
So, lets review. The snow starts too late for me to not go to class on account of weather, snows just long enough to make my drive home fun and then stops just as soon as I get home. Blargh!
Ouch!

As you can see, I made it through the storm yesterday. It got really rainy later that night as well, but I didn’t feel like checking to see if it was anything I should be worried about.
Ugh…I’m not sure if I can do this. The questions of the day for most of the week have been…lacking somewhat, so I have to go freeform. I’m not sure I can come up with semi-interesting things to say all the time!
Um…ok…er…What should I talk about???
Oh! My mom recently got a glucose testing kit because she’s having some problems with low blood sugar, and she keep wanting me to jab her with the needle for some reason. I’m trying to decide if I should be freaked out or not.
