I Didn't Fail!! (With Bonus Car Related Item)
Dec 17th 2007
Today was the day I got my grades back for this semester of school. My horrible, horrible software engineering course (which I've complained about before) resulted in a C- which I'm happy to take since I won't need to take the stupid course ever again. I got a B+ in world religions which is about how I expected to do.
I actually contacted the dean of the school about Software Engineering because of how the course was taught. Mostly because of the fact that with roughly 4 hours of class scheduled per week, we only met about an hour and a half of that. The instructor pretty much gave off a vibe that he didn't want to be there. He'd give his lecture, mumble something about seeing us next week and then rush out of the room in 40-50 minutes. It was getting totally ridiculous.
The dean actually called me back and told me that something was going to be done about it after final grades because 2-3 people had complained about it. I also complained that I thought the course was much too centered on Java, to the point where it felt like it was a Java programming language course. That one didn't go over quite so well, but…we'll have to see I guess. Hopefully future students don't find the course as much of a waste of time as I found it to be.
Moving onward to next semester, I found out I need to take one more course just so I have enough credits to graduate in addition to my project. So when school starts up again I'll be taking a Statistics course, plus doing my final project which is all set up and squared away as far as having an instructor and a project. I just need to do it now.
I'm almost free…
As far as the bonus item goes, my new car has developed a severe case of non-working-airbag syndrome. I was driving home from my friends house on Saturday and my airbag warning light started flashing. I called the dealer up today and it's being brought in tomorrow for service. Hopefully it's just a little kink and won't develop into a major long term issue. That would be…annoying. I'm also having them check out a squeak that's developed from the center console area that occurs when I'm going through corners. Sounds like the little silver trim around the gear shifter is loose, so it rubs against the plastic and causes it to make a noise. So hopefully I can take care of both things.
Random Dump O' Stuff
Sep 5th 2007
I'm still alive! Honest!
I just really haven't had much to talk about since the state fair. Or much that I'd like to throw up on the internet anyway. There have been a few things going on but nothing that I could make a full post out of, but now that there's enough collected random stuff…
- I got sunburned at the state fair, just below my eyes. That was annoying. I guess I forgot to put sunscreen there.
- I've determined my Dad should purchase all concert tickets for me from here on out. First 2nd row at the Porcupine Tree show, now we've got 4th row center seats to see the Blue Man Group in October, a week or two after seeing Porcupine Tree. Next up, Trans Siberian Orchestra tomorrow.
- Apple is going to be releasing new iPods today based on popular speculation. Several of my friends are on strict orders to knock me unconscious if I even imply that I'm putting my credit card into any web forms.
- My apartment has a new green screen door and will be receiving a brand new front door at some point in the future. Also green.
- My software engineering professor is really hard to understand, and he says "ummmm…ah….errrrrr…" every 2-5 words.
- I met up with a friend from my high school who was also taking software engineering. Which is handy because the course requires group work.
- I'm currently in the process of eBaying the more expensive cards in my Magic:The Gathering collection. I used to be big into it but they've sat in a closet for a couple years and I figure I should sell them before people stop playing the game. Looking back at my last 31 days of eBay history, I've sold $768.53 total worth of magic cards so far, bringing me to the realization that I spent wayyyy too much money on that hobby.
- My Belkin iPod car adapter (charger + line out) has been on it's last legs for a while after the casing got broken on the dock connector part, leaving just the bare connector and the wires. Yesterday wires started falling off, until finally, it killed the sound, so I need to get a replacement at some point.
- Another one of my Zebra Danio's vanished. This time it wasn't in the filter. I have no idea what happened to this one. Vanished like ol' one eye.
And there we go. Random facts related. Now to tag that mess…
From The "Just Give Me My Diploma And Let Me Go" Department
Mar 26th 2007
It's been a little while since I've posted anything about school so I think it's time for a little update on my progression past red tape and arbitrary hurdles that are being thrown in my path simply to cause me to spend more money.
If you recall (which you probably don't, but I won't fault you for that), I need one more computer related course before my tech requirements are met for graduation. This class is Software Engineering. A class all about learning how to do a complete software project from beginning to end. You know…the stuff I'm ALREADY DOING. Anyway…They never offer it at night, but I've been working with the department head and we've got a plan. I'm going to take the graudate version of the class (sigh) and that'll count for my undergrad requirement.
I just need to get over there and file a petition.
I also need to contact my high school and get them to send a copy of my transcript to my school so that I can petition to get them to give me credit for my high(ish) final grade in my high school French class. I need to get an answer to the question of if that'll give me the credits for taking French or if it'll just say I satisfied the requirement but I still need to take another random course in order to get enough credits to graduate.
In short, this whole setup is stupid, give me my piece of paper and let me move on with my life.
I Have…A Plan!
Jan 14th 2007
Thursday I managed to get a hold of the department head at my college so we could discuss what I need to get done in order to graduate (finally).
After a lengthy conversation, I ended up needing the Software Engineering class which had sparked this whole thing to begin with (since I needed to take it at night, but it’s never offered at night), the final big project thingy, some sort of Western Civilization course and 2 open elective courses that are whatever I feel like taking.
The confusion with my calculus has been resolved I hope. He said that even though I took calc at my first school, when I transfered into my current one, they took my pre-calc course as the highest level of math I completed, even though calc 1 was on my transcript. He said he’d fix that.
So I’m taking 2 classes this semester. Themes in Western Civilization since the Renaissance (Western Civ requirement) and Constitutional Law (Open Elective #1). I’m interested in the constitutonal law stuff so I figured that’s a decent pick. Seperation of powers, supreme court decisions and their effect on the branches of government, etc.
I’m probably going to be taking one course over the summer (open elective #2) and then finish out with the software engineering class and the project in the winter and graduate by december.
That’s the plan…hopefully things don’t go off. I really want to get done with school and put all of this junk behind me.
