Evil Schemes…Revealed

0

I think I may have the coolest friends. One of which has been “scheming” for the past week or so. She’s generally not very good at keeping the fact that she’s working on something a secret, but she’s really, really good at hiding exactly what she’s doing.

For the past week she’s been dropping hints, trying to throw me off. Paper cuts were quickly explained away as “trying to outline the scheme for future generations to admire” or something similar. She had planned on swinging by my place last night on her way home from work to complete the scheme, but I foiled it by going out to dinner with my parents. She then lead me to believe it was something time-limited due to the fact she actually made an almost special trip (not exactly on her way home from where she was anyway) later in the night.

Crafty.

As it turns out, it was a drawing (she’s the artistic type) of my favorite character that I play in City of Heroes. With Penguins!! I had suspected something similar was coming, but then she kept throwing me just a little bit off balance, and with her…who knows what’s going to happen next? ;)

She’s really the master of thoughtful gifts, just when they’re needed most. I’m not sure I really conveyed exactly how much I appreciated it when she was over last night, since, for me, things like this tend to need a little time to sink in, but I love it. I’d have taken a picture but…well…crappy camera phone really wouldn’t have done it much justice, so too bad! It’s all color pencil-y…and did I mention the penguins?!? (As anyone who, for some reason, might actually be reading this regularly knows, I’m quite fond of Penguins)

Anyway, I need to get a frame now. Thankfully the person who was in this apartment before I was was also a bit artistic, and enjoyed hanging her creations on the walls…so I don’t really have to make too many new holes when I want to go hang stuff.

Oh, and the reason she made it seem like it had to be given last night or the whole thing would have been ruined? Partly to throw me off the trail, partly because she’d probably just come out with it and tell me eventually. Kinda like me actually. I can’t keep things I’m doing for other people a secret…I want to tell somebody!

So…Tired

Wow, yesterday was exhausting.

I got a call from my sister at 8:22am. “Santa came! Get over here so we can open presents!” The plan was for me to head over at 9, but I guess she got a little antsy. Fine by me. I head over to my parents house for the ritual cinnamon bun and Christmas gift exchange. I ended up with a bunch of penguin themed kitchen items. Woohoo! Oh, and some cleaning supplies. It’s amazing how much you appreciate this kind of stuff after you move out. I also now have a LARGE stack of games that I need to play, and a pair of Sennheiser HD-595s which are AWESOME. I can’t stop listening to these things.

After the gifts, we hung out at my parents for a couple hours and headed for my apartment after lunch for the Wii party.

That part went really well. First of all, I discovered that I CAN fit 5 people in my apartment without some sort of a pry bar to get them all through the door. We mostly played Wii Sports Bowling, Tennis and Powershots from the training section. I tried introducing Rayman, but I’m not sure they were quite ready for that as far as wrapping their heads around the motion control. Maybe some other time.

The best part was my sister boxing her fiance. They REALLY went at it. My sister won.

We finished up with the Wii (My sister complaining that her arm hurt. I warned her!) and went to my grandmothers to meet with the rest of the family. 5 hours of kids running wild, catching up with everybody and, of course, the traditional Christmas Eve game of Pitch. As usual, we split up into teams, girls against the guys. The guys cleaned up this year.

After all of that I fell into bed around 10:30ish and just got up a few minutes before I started writing this post. This afternoon I’m headed out to my Aunts house to take care of the family stuff for my dad’s side. My parents might be coming back here for a little bit for some more Wii action as well. Not sure on that, we’ll have to see when they call me.

QotD: Things I’m Truly Passionate About

What are the things in life that you’re truly passionate about?
Submitted by Jess.

PENGUINS!! Ok, that sounds kinda…weird…

I’m not sure I really have something that I’d be truly passionate about. Maybe I do, but I can’t tell it apart from anything else. My interests tend to jump around a lot.

I love music, and one of these days I want to learn how to play guitar or…something. Anything really. I think it’d be fun, but it’s just one of those things where I keep saying “gee, wouldn’t it be nice to try it…” and never actually do. I love listening to music though. There’s way too much good stuff out there that I haven’t found yet and don’t have the time to actually listen to.

Video games are another thing I might consider as being passionate about, or as close to it as I come. I mean…I got up at the crack of dawn to stand out in front of Target last weekend to get a game console. That’s pretty passionate right there. I just wasn’t passionate enough.

I love penguins. Not sure why, but I’ve always been fond of them. That’s a pic of the Homboldt penguins at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse. These pictures were taken on a trip with some friends to the zoo over the summer. I believe I’ve mentioned that before.

QotD: Collector’s Item

What do you collect?

I don’t really “collect” anything in the strictest sense of the word. I do seem to enjoy buying plushy penguins though…epically Tux, the linux penguin, although I like real penguins as well.

I also have a smallish comic book collection, but I’m more into that for the stories than the value. I don’t have the time or the patience to collect anything that might be worth real cash.

Oh yeah, I also have a bunch of Magic: The Gathering cards, including some expensive ones, like a Library of Alexandria as well as 2 English language Mana Drains. I haven’t played in a good while though, but the thought of going back down to the card shop some weekend is starting to appeal to me more and more as time goes on. It’s too expensive for me to really get back into as much as I was though…

Mmmm…Penguins

Got my shirt from the Wally and Osborne webcomic that I read whenever he decides to update it. It was on sale…I couldn’t pass it up. Penguins is Serious.

QotD: I’m Such A Nerd Because…

What’s the nerdiest thing about you?

Ok, first of all…I’m a geek. Not a nerd. There’s a slight difference. Geeks are nerds with social skills and no pocket protectors. You can probably pick a nerd out of a crowd, but a geek is a little harder to spot. I get a little touchy about the difference ;)

Anyway, to answer the question, I’m really not sure. I do computer programming in my spare time for fun. That’s probably it right there. I enjoy figuring out how to solve a problem and seeing what I make actually work. That’s my only real useful like hobby I guess. The rest involves just playing video games and other time wasting things. I’m one of those people who learns a new programming language just for the heck of it.I also have a stuffed penguin collection. Tux the Linux penguin features promiently in there, but I do have another penguin that I picked up at the zoo (The friends I was with gave me some very odd looks after that one). That might be runner up on the geek-o-meter.

There’s nothing wrong with collecting stuffed penguins! Don’t look at me like that! I also have one of the Serta Counting Sheep that I got from my parents for Christmas a couple years ago after saying “I want a sheep!” a couple times when the commercial was on.

I also have a couple of the Neopet (quit looking at me like that again!) dragon type things from when McDonalds was doing their Neopet happy meal toy thing. My sister worked there at the time, so she was able to swipe a couple for me ;)
