QotD: OS Preference

Windows, Mac, Linux – What’s your preference and why?
Submitted by ramblingsbymark.

6 months ago I would have said “Windows” since I’m a gamer and while I do like the idea of Linux, I just find myself using it more for a server OS than a desktop OS. However, ever since I got my MacBook Pro, I’m a Mac guy. At least, a dual-OS guy anyway. I’m using my MBP for pretty much everything these days. I only turn to my desktop if I’m going to be typing a lot (better keyboard) or playing games.

I love OS X. It took some getting used to coming in from windows, but I made the transition and I really enjoy the way it works and looks. I like that it’s UNIX based, so I can drop into a command line when I need to. I love the active shareware development community. While it’s true that there’s less software overall for the Mac, the stuff that’s out there is generally quality applications as opposed to a mountain of crap that you need to wade through on the windows side to find a useful app.

I keep toying with the idea of getting a Mac Mini or an iMac to work as my desktop PC and then using my windows box just for games, but I’m not sure if it’s worth it right now. Maybe later. The Mac Mini would work, but I’d need a bigger hard drive to store my crap on and I don’t want to go the external drive route unless I have to.

If Apple released a mid range desktop like the Mac Pro, but without the Xeon processors, I’d be all over that for my next machine. That way I can use OS X and still have the option of upgrades for my gaming habit (by running windows in Bootcamp)

All Studied Up

I finished going through the rest of the study guide for my History Midterm on my lunch today. I think I’m all set for this thing.

Also, this was the first time I had brought my MacBook Pro to work in order to get some homework done. I expected to at least get a couple comments, but nothing. Oh well. Better for me since I want to avoid talking to people as much as humanly possible. I don’t need to hear how well somebody son is doing in science class simply because we’re around the same age. I DON’T KNOW YOUR SON! NOR DO I CARE IF HE JUST GOT A JOB AT WAL-MART!

Er, sorry…not sure what got into me there.

Hideously Complex Audio Setup: Complete

0

If you’ll remember, last week I had some problems with iTunes 7 on my windows computer, so I devised a system of playing music and syncing with my new 80GB iPod which was rather complex. The final piece in that system arrived yesterday.

Just to recap, here’s the system. Since I need iTunes 7 in order to sync my iPod and I want to be able to play music while other programs are using my sound card, I moved my entire music collection to my MacBook Pro in OS X where iTunes is much less buggy right now.

I then ran a stereo cable from my headphone jack out to the line in on my Logitech speakers which worked reasonably well. But I’m a sound quality guy. I like having the best quality I can afford to have.

Reason #513 that I love my MacBook Pro. It has an optical output (and input actually) for sending out a digital audio signal. And my Audigy 2 has an optical input. So I figure might as well send the signal digitally so that there would be less interference.

So that’s what I’m doing now. I find it fun that I can have the optical cable almost plugged in and have the signal travel over the air into the cable if I have it lined up right. Mmm…fiber optics are fun!
