QotD: Up All Night, Sleep All Day
Apr 1st 2007
When is the last time you stayed up all night?
It was quite a while ago. One of my friends used to have LAN parties at his house where we'd stay up all night playing multiplayer video games, like Half Life deathmatch and such while watching moves. It was fun.
The best times at those parties though were when we started approaching the 3am barrier. After 3am, you come up with some of the weirdest games ever. For example, at one point we were playing NASCAR Racing 2003 I think it was …whatever the last one that Papyrus put out…on one of the bonus fantasy tracks (the super speedway road course one) where one player tried to complete the 3 lap practice while the other players tried to stop him in any way possible. This involved setting up elaborate road blocks with our cars, driving the wrong way around the track in order to have a head on collision…
None of that stuff is possible at normal hours.
STGC Fragfest 06: Day 2
Oct 1st 2006
Sorry I’m a bit late writing this in, but I spent a good portion of today getting things done that well…needed doing.
My cold is still bugging me, unfortunately. I spent more money than I care to think about yesterday on vending machine water.
I got there about 8AM, where a bunch of people were still asleep from last night. I hung around for a bit..enough to listen to the wakeup call over the Gym loudspeakers…a loud rendition of FPS Doug’s “BOOM! HEADSHOT!” scream, followed by some loud music. From my perspective, that was pretty funny. I bowed out shortly after to go Wal-Mart and pick up some DayQuil for my cold that just…won’t…die.
After I got back, people were doing some Unreal Tournament 2004 instagib deathmatch, which I’m pretty decent at. I almost won a match…got beat by one frag. Drat. Anyway, the tournaments started around 12-1PM with the Guitar Hero Tournament. I was doing pretty well and would have finished in 2nd or 3rd place but the tournament ran long and the Unreal Tournament Instagib tournament started up before the guitar hero one finished.
I wanted to do the UT one more than guitar hero, so I bowed out of the final rounds. Since they tournaments were supposed to be running one after the other and not overlapping, the president of the gamers club felt sorry for me, so he gave me a bunch of free swag stuff, including a nvidia lego-man keychain, a crucial mousepad and a bunch of different stickers.
I lasted 4 rounds in the UT tournament but got knocked out, unfortunately. A friend of mine took first place and won a new case and a power supply which was pretty cool.
After I dropped out, I didn’t do much more multiplayer game playing. I hung out and watched the iMac roll (rolling an iMac down a hill in an attempt to destroy it…video coming soon) and then played some Lego Star Wars II off and on until 2AM when I finally went home. The last tournament was a Counterstrike: Source tournament which I wasn’t that interested in. I hear it went until at least 4-5AM, so I’m glad I didn’t wait until it finished to see what other people were doing after.
Anyway, I had a blast. These things are always fun. Sigh. Back to the mundane then…
STGC Fragfest 06: Day 1
Sep 30th 2006
I’m about to head back into the LAN party after going home last night to sleep in a real bed, but so far things are going pretty well. Met up with some old friends I hadn’t seen in a long time, had some fun playing games, hanging out, etc.
I had to cut out earlier than I wanted to due to my coughing fits. I figured it’d be a good idea to go home and sleep instead of actually hacking up a lung.
Off to Dunkin’ Donuts and then back to the party.
Sweet, Sweet NyQuil!
Sep 28th 2006
I had NyQuil for the first time last night. I’ve had trouble sleeping the past couple nights due to this stupid cold that just won’t go away. So I decided to be a little more proactive about things and bought some NyQuil cough in order to try and help with this stupid cough that just won’t go away.
It’s an interesting experience
I did sleep through the night though which is a plus. I really, really hope I beat this thing by tomorrow (yeah right…) because that’s the start of the mutli-day lan party thing and I’m really looking forward to it. I guess I’ll just have to bring lots of cough drops. LOTS of cough drops.
As far as my current state of being…I’ve got a headache again (this is getting old), and the previously mentioned cough, but otherwise I’m OK. I’ve got tomorrow off work, so that should help some.
QotD: This Is When I’m At My Best
Sep 22nd 2006
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Neither, really. Well, if I had to pick, I’d say a night owl, since I’m really, really not a morning person. But I do my best work in the middle of the day and I can’t really stay up all that late, at least not anymore.
What happened was, I usually went to bed around 10PM or so until college. I then met friends who stayed up much later, and we played online games together (Diablo 2 mostly in the early days) and they slowly changed my sleep schedule over to an midnight to 1-am bedtime. Sometimes 2am on weekends.
Over the past 6-10 months or so, I’ve slowly shifted back down to an 11pm bedtime. After that, I’m not exactly fully functional. Which is going to be fun coming up since I’m going to a large, multi-day lan party event the the gamers club at my college is putting on. Gaming 24/7 for 2 days. I’ll probably skip out to head home and take a nap, then return for the next days festivities.
