Yet Another Weekend Update
Aug 25th 2008
Remember last week when I said I would stop doing these gigantic condensed weekend posts? Well, that'll be starting next week apparently.
Friday
Friday was the day of the company picnic, which I mostly look forward to only because I get paid for going to a park for 4 hours. I'm not a very social creature you see. My mom (for those who don't know she also works here) ended up bringing Beasely (the puppy) along so at least there was something to do for a while. I mostly spent a lot of time wandering around with the dog. Which is a fine conversation started by the way. People always want to know how old she is and such.
The one thing I should mention would be the egg toss contest. These were some really, really tough eggs. People were tossing them straight up in the air as far as they could throw them and they were bouncing when they hit the ground. So needless to say, this event took quite a long time to complete.
By the time we had to leave, I was totally beat and felt just like sleeping when I got home, but I somehow managed to stay awake and get in a little work on my various projects before I realized that I was just too tired to get anything useful done.
Saturday
The main plans for Saturday involved getting together with my friends for general hanging out. We watched some more anime stuff. Ah! My Goddess this time which was pretty good. I can see it has potential for being pretty entertaining. Then some more MST3K and a couple episodes of season 2 of Dexter which were very good. I highly recommend checking out Dexter if you've never seen the show. There was some frozen margarita action going on too, which served to make the suggested Trivial Persuit game later in the evening very entertaining (as per usual with such things). All in all not a lot to discuss but it was very relaxing.
Sunday
Sunday was going to be my serious work day. But first I had to spend an hour in grocery store hell. Seriously, it was every single slow moving and inconsiderate person on the face of the planet. It started out when the deli counter person who was waiting on me couldn't find anything I asked for. And thought that ham (what I didn't want) was turkey (what I did want). It was…not fun. That was followed by getting held up by people who park their carts diagonally across the asile, People who stop at the entrence to every asile in the middle of the store to check their shopping list blocking everyone behind them. The lady who paid by check. The lady with the wad of coupons. The person who wouldn't move their cart so I could start unloading my groceries. And finally, the woman who decided she would wait for her husband to bring the car around by standing in the doorway and parking her cart so nobody could get through. It was not a pleasant experience by any stretch of the imagination.
However, I managed to escape and got home to work on Wassy's website a bit more. I made some pretty good progress before I had exceded my limit for useful time worked and then spent the rest of the evening watching the closing ceremony for the olympics which was…cracked out as per usual. The chinese really do know how to put on a good show though. The amount of planning this must have taken is amazing. I'm really sad to see the olympics go because I thought it was a pretty fun year and a good year for the games in general.
So that was basically my weekend. Hopefully I'll be motivated to split it out to seperate posts next weekend because it's the weekend of the state fair.

I Don't Totally Suck At Cooking
Jan 4th 2008
I decided while grocery shopping tonight that I wanted to have something for dinner that I don't usually have. And Wassy had mentioned a recipe for salmon to me last week (or was it earlier this week…I can't remember. The holiday vacation kinda screwed up my concept of time) that looked like it was simple enough that I could tackle it with my limited cooking skills.
So I wandered around the grocery store trying to find where they put the stupid soy sauce. I also had to talk to somebody at the seafood counter to get my salmon (which, if you know me you'd know that was a big deal. I hate talking to people). Brought it home and started marinating.
An hour later I'm enjoying some salmon that isn't half bad. Definitely some room for improvement, but, well…I wasn't expecting to get it perfectly the first try. The next time I do it it'll be better. And there will be a next time because I have an awful lot of garlic products and soy sauce that I'm probably not going to be using otherwise.
I've been trying to branch out a little bit in regards to the stuff I eat for dinner. I'm trying to get away from pure frozen type stuff and try to move towards things that involve more than one step. Although one step is nice sometimes too.
The Weekend Rundown
Dec 4th 2006
So I haven’t posted much at all this weekend because I was too darn busy to write something down. So here’s a post covering the three days of my weekend.
Friday
I had the day off because I took every Friday off until the end of the year, plus December 26th to use up some vacation time I had before it vanishes at the end of the year. So I basically stayed home and played Suikoden V and hoped that somebody on the internet would get some Wii’s in stock because I’m actively trying to find one at this point. Towards the end of the day, target and amazon actually got their bundle in stock, but I held off because I’m not sure if I wanted the contents of the bundle and I was planning on trying to score a Wii Sunday morning at Target anyway.
Saturday
Today I had plans. Lots of plans. However, the first thing I want to mention is an emergency cheese run.
I had a bit of a crisis, since I wanted to make a sandwich and had no cheese. You can’t really have a good sandwich without cheese! So I went to the store to get some. I went to check out in the express, 15 items or less lane and there’s two people in front of me. The person actually paying was an older woman who pulled out a wad of coupons and double coupon things from the paper. In fact…she might have clipped every coupon in the entire newspaper ad. So we spend roughly 10 minutes sorting through all of her coupons so she could save 50 cents on orange juice. I swear, if she pulled out a checkbook…
The next person in front of me was a little kid buying a stuffed animal of some sort. The cashier asks for his advantage savings card thing and he then proceeds to yell across the store to his mother asking her if he can use her card. At this point, I pull out my card and hand it to the cashier and told her that he can use mine. So FINALLY I get checked out and leave the store. Waited about 15 minutes in the express lane for that.
So later that afternoon, I went to meet up with some friends to play some Wii/XBox 360/PS2 games and just generally hang out. A plan was worked out for the weekend where I would stay overnight at one of my other friends places since they’re closer to Target than I am and I was going to be over there Sunday, on call for helping out with a school project that involved some PHP web programming anyway. So that’s what happened. Cut to Sunday…
Sunday
Sunday I was awake at 5am, trying to get a Wii from Target, but I decided not to actually get up and going until 6 because I didn’t think there would be too much of a line. I get going, get to the store about an hour and 15 minutes before it opens and there’s already a line of, apparently 28 people. So I got in line, I’m number 29. The person in front of me turns around and said that we might be out of luck since the word is they only have 27 and the person in front of her is 27…but we waited it out just to make sure. They came out about 20 minutes later and confirmed they only have 27. I met another friend of mine in line behind me, so we took off to best buy to see if they were going to get any in.
We get to best buy around 7:20-ish and there’s one guy standing outside. My friend called his girlfriend and got her to check the Sunday paper ad and it wasn’t in there, so instead of waiting in line for an hour and 40 minutes in the freezing cold before the manager got there at 9 (the store opened at 10), I decided to just go back to my friends. Which ended up being a smart decision since they ended up not having any.
So I spent the day playing Zelda on my friends Wii, hanging out and not really helping out with the programming project because, as it turns out, I wasn’t really needed. But I had fun, as always hanging out and stuff.
The extreme fun of the weekend didn’t make coming back into work this morning any easier though. That set of annoyances, however, will be saved for another posting…
Pointless Questioning
Sep 7th 2006
The Scene: A Grocery Store. around…7pm. It’s slightly busy, people are buying food.
Cut to the cereal aisle.
Me: <reaches up and grabs a box of cereal, places it in cart>
Random Woman: Excuse me, is that cereal good? My son wanted to try it…
Me: (What I was thinking) Of course it’s not good. I buy it because I hate it!
Me: (What I actually said) Umm…yeah.
Why do people ask stuff like that???
Labor Day is a Busy Grocery Day?
Sep 4th 2006
I realized a little bit earlier today that I didn’t really have much food for dinner, so I went out to the grocery store to get some.
Wow…who would have thought people would be buying all their food items today? It was as busy as I’ve ever seen it. Maybe they were on their way to a mattress sale of some kind.
Anyway, Steve Irwin passed away today. The crocodile hunter, of course. It’s really a shame to hear since he did so much for the environment and zoos and stuff. As much as I’ve sometimes ragged on him in the past, he did a lot of great things for the world. He’ll be missed. I feel bad for his wife and kids though. Nobody should have to go through that.
