QotD: My Favorite Holiday Traditions
0What are some of your favorite holiday traditions?
Submitted by sami711.
I think my favorite tradition is going over to my grandmother’s house on Christmas eve. This is the gathering for my mom’s side of the family which, honestly, I enjoy more than my dad’s simply because it’s smaller and I know everybody who’s there. Makes me feel more welcome to be there. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy spending time with some members of my dad’s family, but there’s way too many people there that I don’t know or aren’t related or something. I prefer a smaller gathering of immediate family. Anyway…
We get there around 2 or 3 and then we have dinner once everyone arrives and my grandmother fusses over everybody, asking if we’ve had enough to eat. Over and over and over again. If we’re lucky the one fight for the day has broken out and died down by this point. They’re usually not bad, but generally one happens every year or so. We also try to avoid talking to my Uncle who’s…odd. He’s a nice guy, but he really has trouble in situations where he has to talk with people.
The little kids open their presents much to the amusement of the adults gathered to watch the flying wrapping paper. That used to be my favorite part when I was a kid, for obvious reasons, but now it’s the traditional game of Pitch after the present opening that I really enjoy. We play teams, girls vs. the guys. Last year the girls cleaned house, but we’re looking for revenge this year!
Last year we went back to my parents and did the whole gift-exchange thing then since on Christmas morning my sister went over to her fiance’s parents for their rituals. I believe we’re doing that again this year. That’s also kinda a tradition for us. We rarely, if ever did the gift exchange part on Christmas, moving it sooner usually.
And then there’s the mandatory cinnamon buns on Christmas. That tradition has gone back for as long as I can remember.
Wedding Report
0Just got back from my cousins wedding reception and, contrary to how I thought the night was going to go, I had a blast.
The Wedding was kinda boring…long. Lots of sitting and standing. Not being an overtly religious person, I’m not too fond of long drawn out ceremonies, but I guess this one wasn’t as long as it could have been. As the priest said, it could have been a wedding mass instead of a wedding ceremony…
The wait between the ceremony and the reception was kinda long too. I went over to my parents house and played StarFox Command on my Nintendo DS to kill time.
Then the reception. Lots of fun stuff. My parents and I were split up at two different, but neighboring, tables. My cousin set up this table specifically so all the troublemaker cousins could sit together and we had a blast. We had a candle war with my parents table with the centerpiece candle. It started since their candle was blown out when we got there. But after the waiters re-lit it, my cousin Heather’s husband Scott went over and blew it out. They then swapped candles with us so that we had the unlit one and they had a lit one. Then they got up to hit the buffet and they gave their candle to some friends at another table. We bribed them to blow it out…and got ours relit. Fun times.
More fun stuff happened, but I’d be typing all night if I typed it all out…so you’re going to have to just get by with that.
Oh, just one more thing. We were the only table with Red Hot and Ketchup. I didn’t realize you could ask for that stuff in a reception setting
Geeky Success! (And Other Stuff)
0Only a programmer would be super excited about this but just as the clock struck 5, I finally figured out how to send an e-mail with an attachment by connecting directly to the server. Woo! I’ve cracked the code that is MIME and mail headers.
Anyway, I went over to my parents house to pick up my netflix movie (The Italian Job, specifically) and I found that she had bought me all kinds of pots and pans and kitchen implements of which I’m currently in serious need. I’m getting all sorts of good stuff as a gift today. This goes back to my discussion with her the other night about wanting to branch out my dinner eating habits a bit, and I mentioned in passing how I didn’t really have a fully stocked kitchen when it came to pots and pans and containers (as she was suggesting stuff I kept saying “Don’t have one of those…” I guess she got fed up). So…she sprung this on me today. Handy.
QotD: Here Comes The Bride
0What was the last wedding you went to? Were you in the wedding?
The last wedding I went to was a couple years ago. My Aunt finally got around to getting married to, well…I guess he’s my uncle now
They’ve been together for as long as I can remember, but finally got around to tying the knot a couple years back.
The next wedding I’m going to is my Sisters wedding next year. I think it’s in July…too far away for me to know the exact date already.
