My New Favorite Term
Nov 2nd 2006
I just came across a term that I’m going to have to remember. Definition from Wikipedia
Heisenbug – A heisenbug is a computer bug that disappears or alters its characteristics when it is researched.
Unfortunetly, I have a heisenbug. My email sending thing is still broke. No idea how to fix it at the current time because it keeps changing whenever I try to pin it down. Argh! At least I have a term for it now.
General Work Happenings
Nov 2nd 2006
It seems they’ve finally fixed the AC. It was actually a decent temperature when I came in this morning. Which was good because I didn’t need anything to add to my not so good morning.
My bad day which began yesterday continued this morning. I thought I had fixed the e-mail problem, but it turns out, it didn’t work. So I spent all day morning working on trying to fix the problem. As it turns out…it was a setting in the program, and not my code that was causing the problem. ARGH!
Well, at least I think so. I’m still waiting to hear back from the customer if it worked or not. I think it will *crosses fingers*
Hopefully tonight I can relax a little bit though, since it’s been a rough couple days. I’m going to have dinner with some friends and then pick up Final Fantasy XII while I’m out and about as well. Hopefully the lake effect snow we’re supposed to be getting either misses or holds off until I get home. My car sucks in the snow.
Arrggh!

I keep thinking today can’t get any worse. Then it does.
First I get a call from a customer, saying they’re having some problems with something I did. No big deal really…fixed that, sent them off a new version. Then they get back to me with some minor cosmetic things (they seem very, very fixated on everything looking exactly like they think it should). I start into that, then end up going to lunch.
I get home, realize I don’t have any meat for a sandwich. Go for the backup peanut butter crackers and realize I don’t have crackers. I then go for plan C, the toasted cheese sandwich. I burn that somehow.
Get back to work, get a note on my desk saying another customer is having some problems with something else I worked on. They’re trying to send out a bunch of mass e-mails and I wrote this thing which connects directly to a SMTP server and sends them out. Works fine here. I finished this at least a month ago. They have to send their e-mails out today. When did we test to see if it worked on their site? Yesterday of course. Does it work? Are you kidding me? Of course not!!
So now I’m trying to scramble to figure out why it’s not working, because I can’t actually connect through our VPN and test it out due to their firewall (Can’t connect out through their internet connection while on the VPN).
So…can today get any worse?
Geeky Success! (And Other Stuff)
Oct 12th 2006
Only a programmer would be super excited about this but just as the clock struck 5, I finally figured out how to send an e-mail with an attachment by connecting directly to the server. Woo! I’ve cracked the code that is MIME and mail headers.
Anyway, I went over to my parents house to pick up my netflix movie (The Italian Job, specifically) and I found that she had bought me all kinds of pots and pans and kitchen implements of which I’m currently in serious need. I’m getting all sorts of good stuff as a gift today. This goes back to my discussion with her the other night about wanting to branch out my dinner eating habits a bit, and I mentioned in passing how I didn’t really have a fully stocked kitchen when it came to pots and pans and containers (as she was suggesting stuff I kept saying “Don’t have one of those…” I guess she got fed up). So…she sprung this on me today. Handy.

I can’t believe people fall for this stuff…the grammar, the sheer stupidity of it all! They wouldn’t send out these e-mails if people didn’t reply, but who in their right mind would think that this is a legit offer?
Honestly, I like reading these things sometimes for the hilarious grammar and broken English. It can be quite entertaining at times
