A Good Day
Oct 11th 2009
Ahh… I REALLY needed that. Despite all of the illnesses starting to fly around in our apartment here, my friends and I managed to get out to the Wine Country for the day yesterday. And man, was it awesome.
The particular wine country region we visited was around Keuka Lake. Although we only visited one of the wineries on the trail this time around. My friends went up for a little getaway in the summer and upon hearing how awesome it was out there (and that Bully Hill is one of my favorite wineries) we determined that we would have to go out as a group to explore a bit.
We seemed to pick the perfect weekend to go. The area was beautiful (look below for pictures) with the fall leaves in the valley with the lake situated at the bottom. Of course that also meant there were a lot of people around, but it really was worth waiting.
The directions to Bully Hill that the winery provided (the GPS is really fruity in the area down there) took us past Heron Hill first, so we stopped there. Heron Hill is home to the best bottle of wine my friends have ever tasted, and we visited there hoping that they would have some left (It was a very limited harvest).
The first thing you notice about Heron Hill is the spectacular view from the tasting room.
There was a ton of people there, so we had to wait a bit to do our tasting, but…as you can see, this wasn’t really much of an issue.
First thing to note about the tasting, our guy had a name tag on it that said “Dave!” and he was quite the character. He kept us pretty well entertained and informed about the wine, so two thumbs up to Dave!. We did the 6 wines for $5 tasting option, including the bottle of the special harvest linked above. Much like them when they first tried it, I had originally thought that I’d see what all the hype was about and then buy a couple of bottles of cheaper wine. But…when the time came that flew out the window and I had to spent my entire wine purchasing budget for the trip on a single $45 bottle of wine. It is the absolute best wine I have ever had, ever. And considering the conditions that created it was once in a lifetime…I had to have a bottle.
There were a couple of other wines that were interesting there too, especially the other desert wine, the 2007 Late Harvest Vidal Blanc. Very sweet and tasty. Perfect for after dinner. Another standout was the 2007 Blaufrankisch Reserve, which was an awesome red wine. And I don’t really like red wine.
The trip continued after Heron Hill with a visit over to the Keuka Brewing Company. Jay is really more a beer drinker than a wine drinker, so this was his destination of choice. And we were worried as soon as we arrived since the place looked more like a shack in the woods, giving off a serious serial killer type vibe. But once we got in it was really nice and the tasting was good. I liked pretty much all of the beers they had availible, except the IPA. That one was a bit…weird. But I even liked the stout and I am not a fan of stouts. Their Wheat beer was the best of the bunch to my taste buds though. My friends ended up getting a growler of the wheat beer to take home.
After the brewery, we left for our final destination of the day, Bully Hill. We had plans to take a tour of the vineyards and walk through the museum before having dinner at the restaurant on site. My friends had lunch there when they came up before, but this time we were trying out dinner.
The tour situation was a little weird since we couldn’t figure out exactly where they started, so we hopped on one that was already going and missed part of the story of the winery. But the basic plot is, the Taylor family always had a Winery in the area. Walter S. Taylor ended up being fired from his own winery when he became outspoken that wines from New York should have labels on them showing where the grapes came from (You can (or could, dunno if this changed) label a wine as a New York Wine despite the fact that up to 25% of the grapes came from out of state). The established winery community were not fond of this idea, so they fired Walter. So he started up his own winery, Bully Hill.
A few years later, the Taylor Wine company (the one Walter was fired from) was bought by Coca-Cola. Owning the rights to the name Taylor when attached to Wine, Coke sued Walter to prevent him from using his last name anywhere on the bottles of wine he was selling. Coke, unbelievably, won the case and forced Walter to blank out his name on the labels. Additionally, the court case prevented Walter from ever mentioning the history of the Bully Hill Winery, such as where they came from and who they were. Walter used this setback to vault Bully Hill into popularity.
After we took the tour, which was really neat (I didn’t realize that every year all the leaves from the grape vines need to be cut down individually by hand…now that’s a crappy job) we settled down to enjoy the view over the lake for a little while until it was time for our dinner reservation to arrive.
And oh my. That dinner was probably the absolute best meal I’ve ever had. I settled on having the Sauteed Chicken Breast (with a light Traminette and fresh herb cream sauce; served over pasta (from the menu)). Wassy had the 8oz, Center Cut Filet Mignon (served with pepercorn demi-glace, sauteed mushrooms and onion rings) and Jay had the Bully Hill Crabcake with Day Boat Scallops (Maryland-style crabcake served on a grilled portabella mushroom cap). And we grabbed a bottle of Bully Hill Spring White to go with the meal.
I cannot say enough good things about this meal. We each sampled each others dishes and they were all awesomeness. But Jay won with the crabcake. That was probably the best crabcake I have ever tasted in my entire life. It even beat out the crabcakes I had IN Maryland. The Fillet Mignon was done perfectly, so tender and juicy and my chicken was great as well. The sauce was excellent and they actually prepared mushrooms in a way such that I found them tasty. Then the deserts (I had peanut butter pie, wassy had the apple crisp and jay had the carrot cake) just topped the meal off.
At one point the chef came by to ask how our meal was and Jay had to shake his hand. It was that good.
An excellent time was had by all, and we went home full and feeling satisfied. I’m definitely going to try to go next year again. As we were leaving, we had a really awesome sunset as well. And the view over the lake at night was really cool.
Two thumbs up for this trip. Would go again. And again. And again.
It's Freezing In Here!
Oct 10th 2007
I went out to dinner with my Dad last night because my Mom isn't here this week (she went to Pennsylvania, again) and that means the kids get taken out to dinner since he doesn't want to cook (that's my theory anyway). Normally I wouldn't post something about it but…this is too good to pass up.
After we ordered, an older couple was seated at the table next to us. Well, more accurately they were seated a couple tables down by the waitress, but they decided they'd rather sit someplace else…so they did.
Then the woman took off her coat and proclaimed loudly "It's freezing in here!" When the waitress came to take her order, she asked if "the cold air was on" and if so, could they please turn on the heat. After arguing with them for a while ("Well, would you like to sit in a different room?" "No, we don't want to sit out there.") they finally settled down enough to order. The man ordered some kind of beer and the waitress asked the woman if she wanted some wine because that would help warm her up. She replied "No, no! I can't drink while I'm taking my medication"
The story from this point is second hand since I had gotten up to get some more bread from the salad bar area while this was happening, but according to my dad, after the woman got back from her salad bar trip, this freezing woman exclaimed "I feel like drinking something cold…" and then proceeded to take several large gulps from her husbands beer.
My theory on this is that her medication prohibits grape based products, because that's the only way this makes any sense.
Oh, and the other room they didn't want to move into? Much warmer than the room they were sitting in. People really confuse me…
Old Habits Die Hard
Jun 1st 2007
I went out to dinner with my family last night. It's the first time we've gone out with the whole immediate family (My mom and dad, plus my sister and me) in while.
Now…for some reason or other, whenever we were out somewhere and the waiter/waitress started reading the dinner specials, we tend to crack up into laughter. I'm not sure why. Might have to do with some of the weird stuff that is mentioned. But it happens. Nobody's laughed at dinner specials for months.
Sure enough, I'm reading my menu trying to figure out what I want when out of the corner of my eye I see my dad trying to hold in laughter. Then my sister does it…now I'm trying not to laugh and my mom is trying to pretend she doesn't know any of us. The moment we all go out again is the moment it starts up again. Hmmm…
We're an odd bunch.
I Have A Wii…mote
Dec 10th 2006
Yesterday afternoon I went out to Syracuse with some friends, as previously mentioned. They’ve been having some rough times this week, so I figured the least I could do was help get them out of the house for a day and go have some dinner somewhere. So we went out and wandered around the mall for a while, which was FUN! It was extremely busy, as one would imagine in December.
I was on the lookout for Wiimotes and Nunchucks if I could find them, considering they’re very rare at the moment and I’ve been convinced to try and camp out for one on the 17th. I have a very persuasive friend. She’s a bad influence, considering she’s most of the reason why I’m into console gaming in the first place. I finally found one at EB Games, just the wiimotes, not the nunchuck, but I grabbed it anyway. I’m just trying to have one extra now…I’m not sure if I want to go for all 4 controllers because I dunno how often I’d use it.
Anyway, we went out to dinner at Olive Garden which was great as usual. It’s nice when I get the chance to go out there. For the record, Peach Sangria = Good.
Thanksgiving And More
Nov 25th 2006
I’ve been a bit busy/too lazy recently to update here, so I’m going to catch up on a couple days worth of activities here.
Thanksgiving was fun. I woke up that morning with dreams of getting myself a $100 XBox 360 from amazon.com due to a promotion they were running. Unfortunately, that wasn’t to be. The load crashed amazons servers for about 15-20 minutes and by the time I got in, it was sold out since they were only offering 1000 of them. Oh well, it was worth a try. Both my helpers came up empty too. (I had my dad and a friend of mine madly refreshing as well).
So I went over to my parents house in the morning to do the traditional Christmas decoration setup. We get the argument portion of the holiday over and done with there by arguing about the most efficient method of setting up the tree (as mentioned before, it’s a nice artificial one. Looks pretty real until you get close to it). During which, we watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade and then I somehow convinced my dad to watch a little of the national dog show. Not that I really wanted to watch it myself. I just wanted to see if I could get him to do it.
Dinner was good. It’s been a long time since I’ve had turkey that wasn’t in a sandwich. My mom didn’t enjoy the cooking quite so much as we enjoyed the eating though. I have a feeling we’re going to be going out to eat again next year.
So Black Friday rolls around and I get the stupid idea to go out later in the afternoon to pick up some items, as well as check around and see if there happened to be a Nintendo Wii out there that had been overlooked in the mad rush. Of course there wasn’t. And it was still a mad rush out there. According to my sister who works at the Staples across the street from Best Buy, people were lining up there starting at 6PM thanksgiving day and by the time she got into work in the morning, the line had already gone way past several of the other stores in that same section of buildings. That’s just…nuts.
So this afternoon I’m going to a little gathering with some friends where we’re going to test out the party abilities of the Nintendo Wii. Been looking forward to this for a while. I guess we’re going to have 4 controllers and a bunch of game type things. My arm is going to be sooo sore tomorrow.
Time Stopped
Nov 22nd 2006
Time slows down when you’re waiting for a 4 day vacation to kick off. 3.116 hours to go.
I’m going over to my parents tonight to have a pre-Thanksgiving dinner (homemade pizza, mmm), and to discuss what we’re actually doing for Thanksgiving tomorrow. We obviously love to plan things in advance around here. I think it’s just going to be figuring out when I’m supposed to be coming over, but I can’t turn down pizza, so over I go.
3.066 hours to go now.
Roaming Backups
Nov 16th 2006
I’m currently carless. Well, I’ll have it back today, so this particular state won’t last that long, unless something horrible happens.
After I dropped my car off, I went out to dinner with my parents. When my dad handed me his coat so I could put it on the seat next to me, I realized that he had a computer backup tape in his pocket. I asked about it and that happened to be his offsite backup tape which he apparently carries around with him. So it’s more of a “roaming backup”. It seems to me that’s not the best plan for keeping your data secure in the event of a natural disaster. Espically since it’s in his office most of the time. I told him he should probably rethink the plan. He said he panicked this morning because it was warm out today and the tape was in his winter coat.
In other news, I bought grapes yesterday. Mmm…grapes. I haven’t had grapes in a looong time. I’m on a quest for healthier foods to snack on. Grapes seemed a logical choice. And they were on sale.
The Result of Sleeping In
Nov 15th 2006
On Saturday I was supposed to wake up in the morning and take my car in to get an oil change, and a state inspection since it’s due this month. Plus put on some snow tires. Note the key phrase in there “supposed to”. I forgot to set my alarm and slept right on through the appointment, so that means tonight I have to meet my dad out there and leave my car so they can do everything tomorrow. Then pick it up later.
So I’m out a car tonight and tomorrow morning. I believe the plan is my mom is going to drive me to work. Anyway, on the bright side, at least I get to go out to dinner with my parents tonight after we drop the car off. Yay! (Any time I don’t have to eat my cooking…it’s a good thing)
