Caught In The Whirlwind

Yup. It’s December.
Dec 9th 2009
We’re right in the middle of our first winter storm of the season right now. Snow, wind and sleet/freezing rain later on in the day. Fun! Today was also my first drive to work after moving further away in true winter conditions. We had a smaller event last week, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as the weather we were getting today.
Altogether though, my drive was better than I was expecting it to be. I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that during the hilly bit, a snow plow had just gone through and deposited a fresh coat of sand. Thankfully. I’m not looking forward to the drive home if the freezing rain prediction holds true though.
December also means planning for family gatherings and the dates of them this year have started to firm up. I’ll be busy the 24th through the 26th with Christmas family gatherings which works out fine for me. Going to be at my parents for Christmas Eve and Christmas and then out to one of my Aunts for the gathering for my dad’s side of the family. We might have some people over for Christmas Eve from my mom’s side…possibly. Not quite sure how that’s all going to shake out though.
Lets see, more random stuff. I did some re-measurement yesterday and it actually seems that I’ll be able to fit a new desk into my space in the office after all. Wassy was up there doing work last night so I figured I’d see where my chair would be pushed with her sitting there at her drafting table working and it actually looks like we have more space than I was initially thinking we would have. That always seems to be the case. So perhaps that can be a tax refund expenditure. We’ll see what happens, as I know I’m not getting nearly as much back this year as I have in previous years.
The Quest For A Desk
Dec 2nd 2009
I’m starting to feel a little cramped with my current computer desk up in our office location in the apartment. I really need a little more space for writing and storage, and I’d definitely like to get my own printer for the times when I really need to print something out. I’d like to get some sort of an L shaped desk so I could have my computer setup on one portion and anything that I need to write/look at on the side.
Unfortunately, I’m a bit space limited as the side part of the desk can’t be too wide or else it will push me too far towards the middle of the room and really make it hard to move around in there. It’s a smallish room to begin with and nearly at capacity.
I’ve been scouring the stores for a desk that will work out and so far I’ve come up pretty much empty. I’ve even taken a road trip out to Syracuse on Monday and checked out the stores over there with no real luck. Heck, I even checked the Ikea website. So I think I might have to come up with an alternative solution. Maybe I can fit a couple desks together or get a table or something. I just don’t want to have unusable space in a corner since that’s where I want to (eventually) store a printer…
Finding the right piece of furniture that fits is annoying. I’m going to be redoing most of my office area eventually though since I also need a new chair. My current one is quite literally falling apart. Several of the bolts are broken and if you sit on it too much to the left hand side it kinda tips over a bit. The chair will be purchased, hopefully, with the bonus money we’re getting next week.
Stuff needs to stop breaking so I can use that money elsewhere…
The Rearranged Desk

Today has been extremely busy and I've just now found a moment to catch my breath. Lots of things happening today at work, from one of our servers going down rendering our online bill payment system inoperable for an hour to a security audit and the usual program tweaks I need to do.
One of the good things though is that I've redone my desk setup a bit. Ok, some background is required here. At my office everyone has a laptop and a docking station. They're not bad laptops but they're not great either. Pretty cheap Dell Latitude D510's. I've never had a monitor at my desk since I've always used a laptop with it's LCD screen which was going fine for a while. But recently I've started getting back aches and such, partly from staring down at the screen (since it's a laptop on the desk). I could have used one of the CRTs we have hanging around but they really mess with my eyes after a while. I can't go back from CRTs now.
So I brought in a 17" LCD (located a spare one…work never would have bought one for me…tough times and all that) to use at my desk and set up with my laptop in a dual monitor configuration. This has made me realize two things. First, the colors on my laptop LCD are so dim and horrible looking. I have no idea how I managed to survive with them for this long. And second, having dual monitors really, really helps my productivity. I like having the second one over there to stash the tickets that I'm working on or any information I need to glance at (like database tables and such) while I'm doing my work on my main monitor.
And it's helping my back out a lot so far it seems. So this has been working out rather well.
