It's A Rock Band Holiday
0I just got back from the christmas party thrown by my dad's side of the family. As I've said before, sometimes this party can be a little…less than entertaining. Mostly due to the people there I don't really know and/or get along with. This year though, it was pretty fun. Everybody was cool, lots of good conversation and food and stuff. We walked in to the spectacle of one of the dogs (there's usually a TON of dogs at this party) wearing a reindeer costume and looking very pathetic. All the other dogs were picking on him and it kept flopping in front of his face so he couldn't really see all that well. Pretty entertaining for a bit, but they took it off him quickly.
The highlight of the event though, was Rock Band. One of my cousins (her husband actually) has Rock Band and he brought it over so we could play it at the party. We played for a couple hours, with various people rotating in and out. I managed to play all of the instruments and sing some as well. I started out at guitar and played that. I was going to play drums after that, but my sister accidently bumped the difficulty on her bass part to Expert so I swapped with her quickly.
Then I got talked into singing. I picked War Pigs as the song and apparently I knocked it out of the park because people were commenting about it for the rest of the night. It's probably because I'm known as the quiet guy who doesn't talk much. Of course, I can also sing pretty decently (if the song is in my range) so I probably ended up surprising some people. I also ended up doing vocals on Tom Sawyer and Enter Sandman.
Just a mini Rock Band review. Pretty fun game for parties. I like the way Guitar Hero handles the guitar parts more than how Rock Band does it, and I also like the feel of the Guitar Hero controller. The drums were pretty fun, but hard to get used to because of all of the stuff you had to do at once when playing them. Overall, two thumbs up, but I probably wouldn't want to pay the full price for the set unless I was going in on it with other people.
All in all, a good way to kick off the Christmas party season. It finally feels like Christmas time to me.
The Longest Day Of The Week…
0…is the day before a 5 day weekend. I was figuring out how much vacation I had left to take and as it turns out, it's enough to take Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas off, so now I've got a 5 day weekend for myself. Handy.
Today is crawliing along like the day before a vacation normally does. I'm just looking forward to all of the festivities of this weekend. Tomorrow is my dad's side of the family, Sunday I'm going over to my friends to operate on people, Monday is the small family gathering and then my mom's side of the family in the evening. Then a day to recover.
I'm finally starting to get into the realization that it's really Christmas time and the year is ending very soon. Good riddance to 2007 I say. Since 2007 is the first full year that I've been blogging, I decided to do a summary post towards the end of the year. I've been going through all of my blog posts from the last year, picking out the big things that happened and I'll be constructing a 2007 in review post which should be up sometime before 2008 rolls in.
If I Had To Do It All Over Again (Part 2)
0This was a previous question of the day, but I just thought of another thing that I’d do over again if I could. Going over to my aunts, on my father’s side, for Christmas this year got me thinking about this.
My grandmother (on my fathers side again) passed away in 2001, a couple months after I graduated. At the time, emotionally, I don’t think I was equipped to handle something like that happening. She had been in a lot of pain, so really it was probably a good thing she passed when she did, because she didn’t have to suffer anymore. I remember visiting her house after graduation because she wasn’t able to make it in my cap and gown so that she could see. Even seeing her like that was rough for me.
When she died, like I said, I don’t think that at the time I was emotionally equipped to handle something like that. I didn’t attend her funeral. To be sure…I was grieving, but, I guess I was doing it privately. Looking back on it now, one of my past regrets would be that I never attended her funeral. While I really wouldn’t want to go back and live through that again, now I wish I had done it differently. I know it may have seemed to some like I didn’t care. But…when nobody was around, I could have been described as a wreck. And to this day and, if I have anything to do with it, as long as I live, I still have the graduation card she sent me as well as the last card I received for my birthday, and I’m not one to keep cards forever. But for these two objects, I’ll make an exception. In fact, I just found them in less than 30 seconds of searching, which…given my storage system (also known as the “Pile-O-Junk”), says something I guess.
What brought this all up today was that my Aunt had made some copies of pictures of my grandfather and grandmother. My grandfather passed away when I was very little, so I never really got to know him. But seeing that picture brought back a ton of memories of going over to her house when I was young. I mentally walked myself through the entire house, remembering the fun I had there and what she was like when she was alive.
This year was the sixth Christmas where we didn’t meet at her house and where she wasn’t there. Life moves on, people continue on their way…but it never hurts to take a look back at the people who are no longer a part of our lives…at least in the physical sense.
I’m not looking for sympathy or anything by writing this or anything. It’s just something that I needed to get off my chest. And now it’s off. So I’ll stop typing. Now.
So…Tired
0Wow, yesterday was exhausting.
I got a call from my sister at 8:22am. “Santa came! Get over here so we can open presents!” The plan was for me to head over at 9, but I guess she got a little antsy. Fine by me. I head over to my parents house for the ritual cinnamon bun and Christmas gift exchange. I ended up with a bunch of penguin themed kitchen items. Woohoo! Oh, and some cleaning supplies. It’s amazing how much you appreciate this kind of stuff after you move out. I also now have a LARGE stack of games that I need to play, and a pair of Sennheiser HD-595s which are AWESOME. I can’t stop listening to these things.
After the gifts, we hung out at my parents for a couple hours and headed for my apartment after lunch for the Wii party.
That part went really well. First of all, I discovered that I CAN fit 5 people in my apartment without some sort of a pry bar to get them all through the door. We mostly played Wii Sports Bowling, Tennis and Powershots from the training section. I tried introducing Rayman, but I’m not sure they were quite ready for that as far as wrapping their heads around the motion control. Maybe some other time.
The best part was my sister boxing her fiance. They REALLY went at it. My sister won.
We finished up with the Wii (My sister complaining that her arm hurt. I warned her!) and went to my grandmothers to meet with the rest of the family. 5 hours of kids running wild, catching up with everybody and, of course, the traditional Christmas Eve game of Pitch. As usual, we split up into teams, girls against the guys. The guys cleaned up this year.
After all of that I fell into bed around 10:30ish and just got up a few minutes before I started writing this post. This afternoon I’m headed out to my Aunts house to take care of the family stuff for my dad’s side. My parents might be coming back here for a little bit for some more Wii action as well. Not sure on that, we’ll have to see when they call me.
Let The Meeting with Family Begin!
0It’s going to be a busy couple days for me. This morning I’m headed to my parents at around 9 for the ritual cinnamon bun eating and gift exchange (a day early because of my sister since she’s going over to her fiance’s house on Christmas morning). After lunch everybody is headed over here and we’re going to play with my Wii for a couple hours until we head out for my grandmothers (on my mother’s side) for the traditional Christmas Eve get together. I have no idea how I’m going to fit that many people into my tiny apartment, but we’ll figure something out…
It started a bit early last night since I went over to my parents and played a game of monopoly. I haven’t played a board game in FOREVER, so it was fun. I ended up winning too, wheee.
Vox Hunt: Holiday Decorations
0Show us some holiday decorations.
Here’ an admittedly bad picture of my Christmas tree this year. It’s about 1.5 feet taller than my last tree, which would make this one…1.5 feet tall.
Hey, my apartment is small…I don’t have the floor space for anything bigger.
It’s got some shiny baubles and stuff on it, but you probably can’t see them due to my bad phone. Maybe I should get a real camera one of these days.
Make The Hurting Stop
0Like many businesses, we’ve got the place wired with speakers in the ceiling here which pump out some random music type stuff….a little ambient background noise doesn’t hurt anyone, right?
Well, unless it’s Britney Spears Christmas songs it doesn’t. Somebody, please end my misery!
Too…Windy…
0It’s been incredibly windy out today. The power has gone off twice as a result, which is kinda annoying. I got lucky the first time. I was playing some .hack on my PS2 and had just saved the game. 2 seconds later, the power goes out.
Today was the big Toys R Us Wii preorder thing that my friends were camping out for. They were first in line for it, and they got their preorder, after standing a couple hours outside in the freezing cold wind. They also apparently got caught in the crossfire of the people rushing to buy the new Tickle Me Elmo. Just figured I’d mention what happened since I brought it up earlier.
I went over to my parents briefly today as well. My mom was showing me this Hallmark christmas thing she bought that moves and sings some carol or something. I’m just glad I don’t live there anymore because I know my sister would be running by there every 5 minutes and punching the button to make it sing and dance.
Why are they selling christmas stuff already anyway?? It’s October! I swear, the holiday shopping season comes earlier every year.
