Soulsucking After Vacation Monday
Nov 26th
Mondays after a 4 day weekend are horrible. Which is why I refuse to answer today's Vox Hunt question. Because there's nothing good about Monday.
It started when I got up this morning. You see, my landlords are switching to a pellet stove for heat generation and they switched their side of the house yesterday and were going to do mine today. So, it got a bit chilly in there by the time I woke up. Nothing major, it was only down to 68 or so, which I'm fine with. But the fact that they're going to be coming into my place to do some work means I needed to clean up a little bit which is exactly what I want to do first thing in the morning.
I finished doing that and getting ready for work. I then made my lunch since I'm trying to not go home for lunch quite so much since my car doesn't get 30MPG anymore and gas prices shot up pretty quick there. Even though I live about 10 minutes from work, that travel adds up, so I'm trying to be better about staying in. Of course…I forgot my lunch on the counter as I'm walking out the door. Grrr…
And at the moment, I'm at work fighting with stuff that doesn't seem to want to work at all. And tonight I was supposed to go over to my partner's place to work on the Software Engineering project that's coming due in a couple weeks but he ended up having to work tonight.
Man, I miss that 4 day weekend.
An Oasis in the Desert
Apr 5th
My week, to put it mildly, has been horrible. Work related things…school related things…general blah like feeling. So I was glad when the opportunity came up to go out with my friends last night and relax a little bit. We went out to Zebb's and then went back to their place to watch some anime that Wassy is trying to corrupt me into liking. Chobits is actually pretty good. I don't like most anime, but certain things I have gotten into. This might be one of them.
I also picked up my PS1 memory card from her that she tracked down for me. I bought Final Fantasy VII over the weekend and forgot I didn't have a PS1 memory card to play it with, so I've been using their pocketstation temporarily. She stopped by a used game store on her way home the other day and found one for me. I was hoping the previous owner had some interesting save game files on there, but they only had two saves for Tactics Ogre, whatever that is. (UPDATE: I have been informed that this is actually a good game. Go figure.)
I've also got a copy of Xenogears coming my way from eBay, now that I actually have a memory card to use with it.
On the subject of fish…I'm wavering a bit. I'm not really sure if I have a good place to stick anything other than a smallish bowl and I don't really want to do that. But on the other hand, I really, really want to set something up. Arrgh!

Wow…What A Day…
Jan 5th
Today’s whirlwind is finally drawing to a close, so I’ve got the chance to document it a little bit.
Big happenings at work today. We had a major reorganization of the software department. 3 people from department lost their job, 2 of them developers, the other in testing. I made it through OK due to my web development skills I guess. We also lost another developer who was shuffled off to a different department, as well as most of our customer support people (3 out of the 4).
I guess we weren’t turning enough of a profit to justify having all of those people hanging around. It was kinda a depressing day for me because I really liked one of the guys who lost his job and it’s a real shame that it had to happen. I’m still a little shocked by it. The day started so normally and then all of a sudden, the entire software division is gutted.
My plans still stand. I’m trying to get my degree and see what I can do about getting out of there before something else happens, I think.
I went out to dinner with my parents tonight to discuss the whole situation. Not really to figure out what to do, just to vent. I think everybody there was stunned by the downsizing…as far as we knew, things were going pretty well for us so far. I’m just glad I came through it with my position still intact.
I’ve got this weekend to rest, releax and regroup. Next week is going to be interesting.
General Work Happenings
Nov 2nd
It seems they’ve finally fixed the AC. It was actually a decent temperature when I came in this morning. Which was good because I didn’t need anything to add to my not so good morning.
My bad day which began yesterday continued this morning. I thought I had fixed the e-mail problem, but it turns out, it didn’t work. So I spent all day morning working on trying to fix the problem. As it turns out…it was a setting in the program, and not my code that was causing the problem. ARGH!
Well, at least I think so. I’m still waiting to hear back from the customer if it worked or not. I think it will *crosses fingers*
Hopefully tonight I can relax a little bit though, since it’s been a rough couple days. I’m going to have dinner with some friends and then pick up Final Fantasy XII while I’m out and about as well. Hopefully the lake effect snow we’re supposed to be getting either misses or holds off until I get home. My car sucks in the snow.
Arrggh!

I keep thinking today can’t get any worse. Then it does.
First I get a call from a customer, saying they’re having some problems with something I did. No big deal really…fixed that, sent them off a new version. Then they get back to me with some minor cosmetic things (they seem very, very fixated on everything looking exactly like they think it should). I start into that, then end up going to lunch.
I get home, realize I don’t have any meat for a sandwich. Go for the backup peanut butter crackers and realize I don’t have crackers. I then go for plan C, the toasted cheese sandwich. I burn that somehow.
Get back to work, get a note on my desk saying another customer is having some problems with something else I worked on. They’re trying to send out a bunch of mass e-mails and I wrote this thing which connects directly to a SMTP server and sends them out. Works fine here. I finished this at least a month ago. They have to send their e-mails out today. When did we test to see if it worked on their site? Yesterday of course. Does it work? Are you kidding me? Of course not!!
So now I’m trying to scramble to figure out why it’s not working, because I can’t actually connect through our VPN and test it out due to their firewall (Can’t connect out through their internet connection while on the VPN).
So…can today get any worse?
