Exhausted

I'm not really sure what it is about the past couple days, but while I've been sleeping it hasn't been really restful sleep at all. I woke up this morning basically stumbling around in a zombie-like state. I'm still sorta stumbling around actually. Blargh.

Not sure if I mentioned it on the blog here or not (I did on my twitter feed…hard to keep track of what I've mentioned where these days) but at the apartment we've been having a bit of an issue with a leaking roof in the living room. Which is a little concerning when you realize that the living room is on the second floor of 3. As near as we can tell the rain (when it gets really heavy) is coming off the roof, hitting the air conditioner that's upstairs and when it gets too much for it to run off normally, it'll run back into the wall, down through and pool on the ceiling in the living room, causing it to leak pretty decently.
Added to that we've now got a problem with the oven. Over the weekend when roasting a chicken, Wassy noticed that the heating element inside the oven had a bit that was glowing bright white and buzzing (like, electrical current buzzing). Looks like something melted off the protective coating and now we've got exposed electrical elements down there. So needless to say, we're not using the oven until we get it replaced.
The replacement bit is the stressful part though. When you can get a maintenance guy out to look at it, they tend to fix things pretty quickly. But the problem is getting them out… The leak issue has been happening ever since Thursday of last week and the only assurances we got was that they were going to put gutters on the building sometime this week. Thanks guys. Real helpful. Hopefully we get somebody out soon.
I really like the apartment, but it's in an older building so there's definitely going to be some issues with the appliances and stuff. I just wish they'd be a little more prompt with the fixing things bit…

Odds and Ends

Just a lot of odds and ends to report today.

First off, my car. I can't recall if I mentioned this or not but the airbag light turned on again on my Rogue, so I took it in for service last week. They had to order a couple parts which came in yesterday. So tomorrow morning I'm going to go sit at the dealership again so they can finish the repair. I do really like my car a lot, but I'm not sure I'd buy another new car the first year the model was out. There's a lot of little hitches and bumps along the way. Thankfully it's all related to stuff that's not essential for making the car move so far, but it is a little annoying to have to take it in for service so often. Really happy with it otherwise.

Second, my room at the new place is in desperate need of a nightstand which has been finished and I'll be picking that up this evening. Hopefully it'll help me tame the random bits that are sort of floating around in my room looking for a place to rest.

Third, it seems I have a 32 dollar credit on my account at time warner because, apparently, I wasn't supposed to pay my entire bill last month since I canceled my account. So now I need to figure out how the heck I can get that money back. Moving is such a hassle…

Easter Everywhere!!

I seem to be in demand for Easter this year. I've been invited to 3 places this sunday…my grandparents, my parents and also to one of my new roommate's parents. Traditionally my grandparents have an Easter dinner thing but this year, due to circumstances that are too long to explain really, I won't be attending that one. I will be going to my parents, but if they hadn't asked I would have gone with my friends over to their dinner.

Whew, that was confusing…

Anyway, not much else to report at the current point in time. Things are still proceeding smoothly on the new apartment front. All I'm waiting for is my nightstand to arrive and I need to get a couple of shelves for game consoles and my bedroom will be complete. And we need it to not rain/snow for a day or two so we can work on cleaning off our balcony and making it a usable space.

I'll try to provide some pictures shortly.

Oh, and last night my roommate's cat actually curled up next to me and went to sleep. This is a big development as she is normally very skittish and won't even get up on the same piece of furniture as me most times. I think it was mostly because I was sitting down next to her favorite blanket.

Good Ol' St. Heater Nick

Well today was the day we got the keys to the new apartment. We being my friends (Wassy and Jay) and myself. The order of the day was to head out there and move a very large mirror into the apartment and hang it up while there wasn't much stuff hanging around in the way. That and hang curtains.

The mirror hanging went well, although it ended up being slightly off center due to the positioning of the studs in the wall. Ah well, it's up there and looks nice. The curtains were more troublesome. Getting everything up straight turned out to be a real pain. But when Jay dropped a screw and I was helping to look for it, saw something in the electric baseboard heater in the living room. I thought it was some sort of mouse for a second then I thought "Hey…is that…santa clause??"

Well… it was.

We have named him Heater Santa and we're going to be keeping him. Note the red arm. The rest of him is charred and blackened by being stuck in the heater. I had to pry him out of the heater because he was stuck on the heating coils inside.
You can't tell from these pictures, but Santa's gloves look like toasted marshmallows. And if you look closely, you can see that one of his legs is falling off. But the best part is on his back.
Looks like Santa's been char broiled! Those are the indents made by the heater coils digging into his back.

We're keeping him as the patron saint of the apartment. We have taken his discovery as an omen that this apartment is a good idea. I mean, we're people who enjoy random and how much more random can you get than a Santa in your heater? You never know exactly what you're going to find when you move into a new place.

The biggest thing about tonight though was how much bigger the apartment was than I was thinking it was. We had so much more space to work with than I thought we did…I think things are going to end up being quite nice in there once we get all settled. I'm going to be moving some stuff over tomorrow evening but the big move comes in on Friday where we really move in.

Going to be a busy couple days!

Moving Time

I may be posting very scarcely over the next few weeks. Well, more scarcely than I have been posting anyway.

I'm moving.
Specifically, I'm moving in with a couple friends. Even more specifically Wassy and Jay. We're getting a 3 bedroom duplex/townhouse apartment at their apartment complex and we're going to be roomies. Still feels a little weird thinking that it's actually going to happen since we've been talking about it for a couple months now.
I've just outgrown my little apartment. Although, really since I'm sharing the space with my friends it's not THAT much of an improvement space wise at least as far as my personal space goes. I can spread out a little more though, and that's the important part. Plus, I've really grown tired of living alone for the past couple years. I think it'll be really nice to have some people around more often…
The apartment itself is pretty nice. Not terribly large, but not small either. I think once we get everything squared away it'll be in the "cozy" category. Wassy and I are going to be sharing the third (smaller) bedroom as sort of an office type space. She wants to have a desk for doing her artwork and I want to be able to have a place for my computer desk and that particular location makes the most sense due to shared musical tastes.
I'm probably not going to have the free space for one of my fish tanks unfortunatetly. I think the 20 gallon tank is going to have to go into storage. But that's all right really. I get to keep my Betta and that's the one I'm most interested in. And you never know how things are going to shape up once we start putting everything into it's proper place.
I'm a little anxious about the move and fitting everything into the apartment and adjusting my habits to living with other people around again, but I really think this is a good thing for me in the long run.

Featured Question: Home Improvement

What home improvement would you most like to make to
your apartment or house?

Sponsored by Blogs.com.

If I could, I would totally remodel the bathroom in my apartment. It's freaking pink. Not just a little pink. VERY Pink. I don't really understand how anybody thought that this was a real good idea.

It's also the weakest room in the place from a functional standpoint. The cupboards are all a little weird and the doors never really stay closed. It could also use a new toilet and probably some touching up in the bathtub area. And a change of floor material. For some reason it's carpet in there. Carpet in the bathroom just sounds like a really bad idea.

Turn Up The What??

I did something last night I thought I would never do…ask my landlords to turn the heat up.

Since I'm renting part of their house, they've got the thermostat on their side of the building. Normally this isn't a problem because they're older individuals who like to keep the temperature pretty high. Recently though they've switched to a pellet stove for heat and it's been a little colder on my side, which isn't that big of a deal because it was usually too warm anyway.

But yesterday it was freezing. There was a pretty good cold wind blowing which was probably the cause since it was blowing at my side of the house. That was combined with a power outage earlier in the day which shut all the heat down. So when I returned from work, it was about 60F in there which is cold, even by my standards. I had hoped it was going to warm up a little bit more after I got back from dinner (Wassy came over yesterday for some mid-week stuff. Guitar Hero/Anime watching) and decided not to worry about it. But then I got back and…still cold.

She turned the heat up after I asked and all was well again. Warmed up pretty quickly after. But I figured I would chronicle the first (and possibly only time) I've ever had to (or ever will have to again) mention that it's far too cold in my apartment.

Soulsucking After Vacation Monday

Mondays after a 4 day weekend are horrible. Which is why I refuse to answer today's Vox Hunt question. Because there's nothing good about Monday.

It started when I got up this morning. You see, my landlords are switching to a pellet stove for heat generation and they switched their side of the house yesterday and were going to do mine today. So, it got a bit chilly in there by the time I woke up. Nothing major, it was only down to 68 or so, which I'm fine with. But the fact that they're going to be coming into my place to do some work means I needed to clean up a little bit which is exactly what I want to do first thing in the morning.

I finished doing that and getting ready for work. I then made my lunch since I'm trying to not go home for lunch quite so much since my car doesn't get 30MPG anymore and gas prices shot up pretty quick there. Even though I live about 10 minutes from work, that travel adds up, so I'm trying to be better about staying in. Of course…I forgot my lunch on the counter as I'm walking out the door. Grrr…

And at the moment, I'm at work fighting with stuff that doesn't seem to want to work at all. And tonight I was supposed to go over to my partner's place to work on the Software Engineering project that's coming due in a couple weeks but he ended up having to work tonight.

Man, I miss that 4 day weekend.

Too…Hot…

It's entirely too hot out right now. Yesterday it got up to something like 92F and humid. I didn't want to cook anything for dinner in my apartment (it was already 80ish in there when I got home from work) so I managed to tag along with my parents to go out to eat.

Then I got back home and it was 83 and the temperature wouldn't go down at all. So as of the time I left this morning, it was 78F and rising indoors.

Luckily I have class tonight so I don't have to stay there long.

Not wanting to do anything that involved, well, moving, I dug into my accumulating stack of Netflix movies and pulled out My Cousin Vinny which was a recommendation from my friends. Pretty funny. However, every time I saw Joe Pesci on the screen, the only thing I could think of was his misguided singing career since last week I saw something on VH1 about awesomely bad career moves. Why Joe? Why?!?

It's Coming!!!

I had a fairly busy weekend this week. I'm trying to get all of my last
minute trip preparation stuff out of the way plus I had to do some
homework for this week since my spring break is over. Drat. Nothing
like spending 3 days of your spring break feeling like crap.

I'm going to be keeping myself busy this week too. Class tonight, my
rescheduled midterm for my desktop publishing/graphic design class
tomorrow night, running around and doing all of the really last minute
stuff on Wednesday such as packing and getting the GPS all ready to go.

I'm also on a little bit of a home redecoration kick. I just replaced
this strange end table thing with a built in lamp that I've had since I
moved in with an actual end table and a real lamp! The new thing looks
much nicer. I need to get something to go up on the wall in that corner
though…It's looking a little bit bare over there. I've also swapped
out my garbage can, although you're probably not quite as interested in
hearing about that…
