QotD: Today’s Top 5
Oct 26th 2006
Books, movies, music; what’s in your top 5 right now?
- Porcupine Tree – Stupid Dream I just bought the remastered version of this off of amazon. The one with the DVD-A of the album included. Really nice, but kinda weird in that Porcupine Tree way. If you’re into progressive type stuff and haven’t checked them out, you should.
Steven Wilson does some of the best audio mixes out there. Everything he touches ends up being great it seems.
- The Dragon Reborn by Robert JordanBook 3 in the Wheel of Time series. I’m really digging this book so far. Like I’ve mentioned on previous occasions, I’m not sure why I didn’t read these before I did, but now I’m making up for lost time. From what I hear the series is best in the beginning and then kinda drags out a bit, but we’ll see…
- Walk The Line (DVD)I watched this last night after renting it from Netflix. Johnny Cash was an amazing man, and this movie lived up to his reputation. I had no idea about what he went through in his life and it made me respect him a lot more after watching it. The movie was incredibly well done, great script, awesome actors. I highly recommend it.
- Final Fantasy IV AdvanceOne of the classic RPGs of all time remade for the Gameboy Advance (and by definition, my DS as well) I think I’m almost done with it. It’s been a fun, classic-like ride so far
I can’t think of a number 5 right now though, maybe I’ll come up with something later
QotD: What I Love About Vox
Oct 25th 2006
In honor of Vox’s launch tomorrow, what’s your favorite feature or aspect of Vox?
I’m kinda scared about the launch actually… So far it’s been a very nice community of people hanging around, but as soon as you open the doors and let anyone in… We’ll have to see what happens.
Anyway, I really like how easy it is to use. I’m a tech-y guy generally and being a web developer, I’ve got no problems getting down and dirty with the code, but if I had to write my blog like that, I probably wouldn’t even use it. I’d be fighting with the template and plugins most of the time instead of actually just using the thing.
I also like the question of the day idea, since it’s really helpful for thinking up topics to write about.
Vox rocks
QotD: All My Computers
Oct 23rd 2006
How many computers do you have in your house?
Submitted by Foomper.
Oooh, you asked for it. Totaling up everything, I have 5. My naming scheme is centered around the ships from Freespace 2, the best space combat simulation ever produced.
- My Laptop (Valkyrie). Apple MacBook Pro 1.83ghz Intel CoreDuo with 1GB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive. This started off just being a standard laptop, but now I’d consider it my main machine for everything except playing games. I find myself doing most of my work/browsing/talking/music playing/whatever on it. I love my MacBook
- Desktop (Aquitaine). Previously my main machine, It’s a AMD Athlon 64 3000+ with 1GB of RAM and a nVidia 6800GT 256MB card in it. It’s used primarily for watching DVD movies (I have a 20″ widescreen LCD attached and a nice set of 5.1 Logitech speakers) and playing games. I used to use it as my everyday use machine until I got my MacBook. I’m due for an upgrade next year when Vista and DirectX 10 come out.
- My Server (Ravana). I just got this thing back up and running over the weekend after lending out the power supply to a friend of mine. It’s basically the guts of my first computer I ever owned. A Pentium 3 833mhz (upgraded from a P3 533mhz which I still have hanging around here somewhere), 512MB of RAM, the original 20GB hard drive for the Operating System (Linux) and a 100GB hard drive for storage which I really need to upgrade. Been kicking for a while now with 24/7 operation. Pretty amazing actually.
- My Router (GTVA_command). This computer isn’t actually doing anything right now since I got my D-Link DLG-4300, but it used to be a router computer, running Smoothwall Linux and being the firewall between me and the world. It worked really well, up until I got my Nintendo DS, but it didn’t play nicely with that. So I dumped it. It’s still sitting there though. Via C3 833mhz with either 128MB or 256MB of RAM, 2 network cards, plus the one on the motherboard and a 40GB laptop hard drive. This thing was a real bear to get constructed since I had a faulty motherboard to start off with. Finally after a month of having the parts, the thing actually worked.
- My old laptop (Pegasus). A dell Inspiron 600m that’s on it’s last legs. It still works OK, but the LCD is getting kinda flaky on it. I don’t really use it for anything these days and I keep it around as a backup.
QotD: Good On A Cold Day
Oct 22nd 2006
What food or drink do you love when it’s cold out? (Recipes and recommendations, please!)
Nothing special here. Just a mug of hot chocolate with some marshmallows. The only time I base what I eat off of the outside temperature is when it gets really hot out. Because sometimes I don’t feel like using the oven since it increases the heat factor entirely too much.
QotD: Weekend Plans
Oct 21st 2006
What are your plans for the weekend?
Today I’m going to be spending most of the day at my cousins wedding/reception. Fun! The ceremony starts in the afternoon and the reception starts at 7 or something. Going to be a very, very long day.
Sunday I have no real plans at the moment, but I’m sure I’ll think of something soon
QotD: My Earliest Memory
Oct 19th 2006
What is your earliest memory?
Submitted by Megan.
The first thing that comes to mind is kindergarten. A lot of stuff in kindergarten. Like coloring this book which was supposed to show opposites, or staying outside in the snow long past when recess was over playing with a friend in the snow.
But that stuff isn’t interesting is it?
I remember being out sick for a while in, I believe, second grade. We had some experiments for science that involved making a windmill by sticking a pin through the eraser of a pencil. My homework got sent home with the pencil included. My mom didn’t read the instructions and sharpened it. We got to that part and I started freaking out because she sharpened the “science pencil”. Freaking out = crying about it because I thought this pencil was one of a kind. Eventually my mom had to take me to see the teacher so she could tell me it was OK.
Ah, the wonders of youth.
Thus ends my embarrassing story of the day.
QotD: How To Kick A Cold
Oct 17th 2006
What do you do to get rid of a cold or flu?
Submitted by ashenflowers.
Why don’t you tell me? I’ve been trying to kick this thing for weeks.
I generally just take it easy, down some cold medication, lots of cough drops, and lots of fluids. No home brew remedies or anything like that. Obviously my system doesn’t work real well…
QotD: I Love To Shop For…
Oct 14th 2006
What’s your favorite thing to shop for?
Submitted by JadedButterfly.
I’m a guy. We get in, we get what we want and we get out. No day long shopping trips, no looking around…nothing. I guess my favorite thing would be electronics equipment since I’m a gadget freak, but I’ve generally got a pretty good idea of what I want to get before I jump in.
I do enjoy speccing out computers though. Lots of fun in there with picking out the various parts and finding things that work well together. Hey, I’m a geek, what did you expect?
QotD: My First Gig
Oct 12th 2006
What was your very first job?
Submitted by Laurel.
I’m probably a little different than a lot of people in that I’ve never worked in fast food or in retail. My first job was during High School, stuffing envelopes with telephone bills for, well…the company I work at now. How’s that for working up the ladder?
I’d come in 2-3 days a month after school and stuff bills. It was pretty irregular work, which got annoying sometimes since it was hard to guess when I had to work. It was also mind numbingly boring.
At some point, the decision was made that I would be the one who printed the bills as well. And that was a lot more interesting than just stuffing bills, so I was happy with that.
Just before I went to college, they pulled me off that and gave me something a lot more regular to do, which was scanning service orders into a computer so that we could have a record of them that was electronic and not just in the giant filing cabinets. So I did that for about a year and then got frustrated with it. So I sent an e-mail off to the head of the software division of the company since he knew me and knew I was into programming from my days of printing the bills and asked him if he had any part time work for me.
So I transfered out of the billing department into the software where I worked part time for a bit until getting frustrated with school and how much I was really learning there and going full time at my job and part time to school. Which is where I’m at right now.
