QotD: Books From My Childhood
Dec 11th
What books did you love as a child?
Submitted by hearts.
My parents had this HUGE collection of Dr. Seuss books which were a favorite when I was very young. Especially “Oh, The Places You’ll Go“. That along with “The Cat in the Hat” was probably the most read book from early childhood that I can remember.
Pretty early on I started branching out into more advanced reading but nothing stands out at me as mentionable specifically. Actually, there is a couple I can think of now. Bruce Coville’s My Teacher is an Alien series was also a favorite of mine, as well as the Willy Wonka books (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). I remember doing these book club orders in school and I’d always end up using the one from a couple grades above me because I was an advanced reader, which I’d have to thank my parents for since they encouraged it so much. It was very rare when I didn’t have a book to read that was either tucked in my desk in elementary school or that I was carrying with me from class to class in middle school/high school
QotD: Very Superstitious
Dec 9th
What are your superstitions?
Submitted by lazywong.
Honestly, I’m not a very superstitious person. I’ve got no problems with walking under ladders (except that doing so is probably not a very smart idea from a safety perspective), breaking mirrors (not intentionally of course), black cats, sidewalk cracks, full moons or Friday the 13th.
I do have some odd habits sometimes (Like if I have a sandwich and chips out of a brown lunch bag…sandwich first, then chips. If it’s on a plate, chips first then sandwich), but nothing that I do because I think something bad will happen to me if I don’t do it a certain way. Well…unless I know that something bad will actually happen, like not making toast in the bathtub, for example
QotD: So Hard To Shop For
Nov 30th
Who’s the hardest person to shop for on your holiday list?
Everybody!
I’m HORRIBLE at giving gifts since I generally have no idea what people want or could even use. It generally works better if the person tells me exactly what they want.
Of course that takes a lot of the surprise out of it…
QotD: Google Me
Nov 26th
Have you ever Googled your own name? How did you feel about the results?
Submitted by elen.
Let’s see here, apparently there’s another me which is also a programmer working on the Linux Kernel. It also looks like this particular version of me either works at or attends Penn State University.
There’s also a guy who does bike races. He came in 14th in some hill climb thing.
Somebody also took the domain name of my name to put up a crappy wedding picture album.
Ooh, finally, the first link that actually points to me is on the bottom of page 2, linked to my now inactive profile at epinions.com.
Not really sure how I’m supposed to feel about that. Knowing there’s another guy out there with the same name who’s also into development is kinda freaky through.
QotD: Thanksgiving
Nov 23rd
What are you thankful for?
I’m thankful that I have a family that wants to help me out, friends to fall back on when things don’t go as planned and a steady job with which I can support myself, which is more than a lot of people out there have. As much as I complain about my job or school or whatever, It helps to stop and realize that not everybody is quite as fortunate.
I am, however, not thankful for my alarm clock, which woke me up at 6:30 on my day off. It should have realized and turned off the alarm. What?? Quit looking at me like that!
QotD: Childhood Frights
Nov 22nd
What were you afraid of as a child that seems silly to you now?
Submitted by navelgazer.
I was deathly afraid of thunderstorms. The fear itself doesn’t seem silly to me, but the extent that I was afraid of them does. I never wanted to be left along with a storm came along. “Clingy” is a good word to describe it. I got over it though. I’m still not at ease when a storm passes through, espically if it’s a bad one, but usually I’m ok.
I went through the mandatory “Afraid of the Dark” phase too.
QotD: Tasty Thanksgiving Treat
Nov 20th
What’s your favorite Thanksgiving dish?
Submitted by Brennan.
It’s not really a Thanksgiving dish as it is a by product of the dinner. My Mom (last I knew at this point) is going to be making dinner this year. We’ve gone out to eat the past couple of years instead of having a homecooked meal, but I think she wants to cook this year. Anyway, when there’s turkey…that means there’s leftover turkey! Which normally gets ground up and made into a sandwich filler. It may sound odd, but it’s something I enjoy a lot.
I’m not one for enjoying large scale dinners. I’m in it more for spending time with family. Thanksgiving is also when my Mom starts putting up her Christmas decorations. Another thing we’ve been doing for a couple years now. Watching the Macy’s parade on TV while putting together the tree (It’s a really nice artificial one) with my dad reading the morning paper in the chair and muttering things about how “It’s too early!”

What’s your favorite kind of Girl Scout cookie?
Submitted by My Lovely One.
Samoas! Mmm…coconut.
I’m also a fan of Do-si-dos, the ones with the peanut butter.

What comedian makes you pee your pants laughing?
Submitted by pookieb.
If you’re talking about traditional stand up comedy then I’m going to have to go with Jerry Seinfeld, considering he’s the only comedian I’ve seen live. I know some people don’t like him, but both times I’ve gone to see him he’s been awesome. And he had two completely different shows about a year apart without any recycled material.
If we’re not going all traditional, I’d have to give the nod to Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood who I had the opportunity to see perform their improv comedy at an evening with show earlier in the year. They rocked with audience interaction and local flavor (they picked business names out of the local phone book to include in their skits.) It’s obvious that they enjoy what they do and the show is a lot better for it.
Vox Hunt: I Wrote This Myself

Show us a picture of your own handwriting.
Submitted by eclaire.
I feel sorry anyone who has to read anything that I wrote out by hand. I must have inherited my handwriting skills from my Dad. My mom’s is much, much neater. As always, I apologize for my crappy camera phone.
