Perfect Timing
0When one is working on deadlines and needs the weekend to get some work accomplished, the last thing a person needs is to get sick. Which is of course, exactly what happened to me.
I started coughing a lot last night at around 8-9 and I knew something was coming, but I was hoping it wasn't going to be too bad. I woke up this morning with a low fever of 100, but I took some Motrin and that went away, so I went into work. As the day went by, my fever slowly returned and I started to feel light headed and dizzy. At least my cough is back to being manageable again. I ended up leaving work at 4:30 because I couldn't take sitting there anymore. Luckily I have enough vacation time to cover that and taking christmas eve off.
But anyway, here I am, resting up and hoping that I don't feel like crap all weekend because I REALLY need to get stuff done.

Coming Up For Air
0I'm smack dab in the middle of the end of the semester crunch week, which is why my posting has gotten a little sparse. Things are going along pretty much as scheduled though which is, obviously a good thing.
I'm all done with actual "classes" now, having gone to my last World Religions class which focused on Islam. We had a Muslim student in the class who was very helpful in explaining about the various daily prayers and even giving us a demonstration of the morning prayer (in Arabic and then translated into English)
Work continues tonight on the Software Engineering Project. This weekend will be partially devoted to research and paper writing for creation stories of various religions.
Zooming backwards a bit, it seems that winter has actually arrived in full force around here. The past couple days the weather has been fairly nasty. I'm happy to report that my Nissan Rogue performs perfectly in the snow. I've had a lot of chances to test it out recently and once I got used to how it drives as opposed to how my civic drove in the snow, I can say it feels a lot more solid. My civic felt like it was at the edge of disaster every time I tried to take a curve, no matter how slow I was going (I once spun it going around a corner at ~5 miles per hour. I just had to sit there and laugh at that one)
So in short, all is good, although it's busy. One more week to go…

Albums Of The Year: 2007
0Well, since the end of the year is closing in and Vox hasn't done this as the question of the day yet (watch, it's going to show up tomorrow) I decided that I'd do it myself. 2007 was a pretty good year for music barring some disappointments. I'm looking at you Dream Theater. But to balance out the fact that the album I was looking forward to most was generally "meh", I made a whole lot of new musical discoveries this year. Radiohead, Epica, Riverside, Redemption, Little Atlas, just to name a few. Inspired by a thread on the mikeportnoy.com forums, I think it's time to rank my favorite albums of the year like I did last year. Except if I could do last year's again, I'd put the Frost* album on top. I don't know what I was thinking with that one. But anyway, onwards to the list.

Porcupine Tree – Fear Of A Blank Planet
Porcupine Tree – Nil RecurringWhat can I say about Steven Wilson? He turns everything he touches to gold and this release was no exception. I'm including Nil Recurring in here too since it was originally intended to be part of the album.
Porcupine Tree continues to impress with Fear of A Blank Planet, continuing the evolution they began with In Absentia. This album sounds like Porcupine Tree, but it has a different feel from their previous works, a trait which Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson have carried through the bands entire discography.
This release, while not quite as strong as In Absentia to me (but that's a tough thing to live up to, honestly) easily captures my top spot this year. The middle section of Anesthetize is one of the most well constructed pieces of music I've heard in quite some time.
This album was made even better by getting front row seats at the Porcupine Tree concert in Albany.

3 – The End Is Begun
I didn't think I was going to like 3 at first. I heard they were good over at the mikeportnoy.com forums after having opened for Porcupine Tree on a previous tour leg, but my first impression wasn't very good.It was only after I decided to check them out more after hearing they were going to be opening for Porcupine Tree at the show I was going to and I'm really glad I did. 3 vaulted into one of my favorite bands and this release, and as you can see, to my number 2 spot of the year.
They've got a fairly unique sound to them (like a lot of the bands I'm into actually…) and until I saw them live, I didn't realize they had two drummers which explains some of their sound. The lead vocalist also has a very unique voice.
What's more, they're awesome live. When I saw them with Porcupine Tree…I'm having a hard time deciding if I was happier with PT's show or with 3's. I'm glad they're going to be opening for Dream Theater in the spring.

Redemption – The Origins Of Ruin
Another band I discovered because they were opening for a band I wanted to see. Redemption opened for Dream Theater, and thus I checked them out.
I was surprised to learn that Ray Alder was their vocalist. I liked him in Fates Warning, but I think his unique vocal style really works much better in Redemption's format. And the stuff he sings is very well thought out. The lyrics on this album are some of the best I've heard all year.
Fall On You, in particular, is one of the highlights of the album lyrically. I'm glad they played that one live at the show I went to.
Speaking of their live show, it's fairly good as well. Ray Alder was spot on live, even though he had a cold. I really need to get some of their other albums if they're going to be anything like this one.

Blackfield – Blackfield II
Hey, Stephen Wilson manages to get on the list again! Who would have thought. Well, this release shows off the versitility of the man again. Blackfield is a more pop oriented group than Porcupine Tree is, being a collaboration with Aviv Geffen. Simpler songs rule here with more lyric driven pieces. There's a few weak spots (Miss U, specifically) but overall this album is extremely solid.
The album retains a lot of Stephen Wilson signatures with a lot of vocal harmony parts thrown in. Christenings is pretty much all of the members of Porcupine Tree playing a song on the Blackfield album with Aviv added in, so it's very much a Porcupine Tree sounding song. One of my favorite tracks, along with 1,000 People and Once.

Symphony X – Paradise Lost
Russel Allen is one of my favorite Metal vocalists out there right now. He's extremely versitle, singing soft, soulful parts as well as powerful soaring vocal lines and even more metal growling type (well, not growling as in death metal…more of a gravely type voice) often in the same song.
The only reason why this album isn't listed higher on my top 5 is because Russel Allen's usage of the more metal type vocals through the entire thing. He doesn't really let loose with the powerful soaring stuff that I like him so much for. They suit the music though, as we'll get to in a moment, but I would have preferred more variety.
Musically, though, this album doesn't disappoint. It's extremely heavy (which is why the vocals are as they are) and well constructed. There's a lot of musical references to their song The Divine Wings of Tragedy, this album being related to it in some way. Still trying to figure out what the connection is, but it's most definitely a concept album.
Symphony X is so delightfully cheesy and they know it which makes them so awesome. I really wish I was able to see them live this tour, but I'm going to have to skip the show, unfortunately.
So there you have it. My top 5 of 2007. This marks the first year where a Dream Theater album was released where it didn't get placed on the top spot. In fact, Systematic Chaos didn't even make the list which surprised me a lot. I really wanted to like the album, but I'm getting the feeling that Dream Theater is straying from their roots a bit too much, away from well constructed songs into instrumental wank-fests that do litle to add anything to the song. There's some good stuff on there. Constant Motion, Repentance, Prophets of War and The Ministry of Lost Souls are standout tracks for me, along with Forsaken to some degree, but…the lyrics this time around by John Petrucci really killed several songs for me. They do work really well live though. I'll have to give them that much.
Maybe I'm moving on and DT is moving in a different direction. We'll have to see what the next album brings. Now…where's my music for 2008??

The Springs Are Against Me
0In the latest installment of what seems to be the ongoing rebellion of all of my computers and electronic equipment, the power adapter for my Macbook Pro has decided to die. Just when I needed the computer over the weekend to work with my partner on our Software Engineering project. So not only was it annoying, it was terribly inconvenient too.
As it turns out, apple charges $80 for a replacement power adapter, so there goes my play money for this week, which is too bad because Dream Theater just put out a reasonably priced hoody that I would have liked to own. Oh well.
What happened was that a couple of the springs in the plug were lose so the prongs weren't making good contact with the computer. Therefore, it wasn't charging. Sigh. Stupid little springs.
I had to drive out to Syracuse to buy a replacement since that's the closest store that had one to me (about an hour of driving each way). They've convienently blocked off about half of the parking during peak shopping season for construction so finding a spot was horrible. And inside the mall was worse. Ugh. I'm never going shopping there again in December. It's just too crazy for me.
I was able to make it back in one piece though. And my partner and I did some good work in getting the framework of our project together. I'm going to be putting some more work in tomorrow and we'll see how much we can get done.
Close Encounters
0I was driving home from work last night (it was dark out, yay for daylight savings time) when about 50-100 feet in front of me, a deer pops out on the left side of the road and starts sprinting across. Now, recall that about a month ago, I purchased a brand new Nissan Rogue. The thought of hitting a deer is pretty high on the things that I don't want happening at the moment list.
Time seemed to slow down, and in my mind I could hear "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooo!!" as I slammed on the breaks. Thankfully, my Rogue has good breaks and I was able to stop with what seemed like a foot or two to spare. It was close enough where the dear looked to be pretty freaked out.
Both deer and car made it though fine. Stupid deer…
End of Semester Crush: An Update
0As I mentioned previously, there's 2 weeks left in this semester and as such, I'm currently buried in schoolwork. Most pressing on my mind at this point is my Software Engineering project which is going to be a tremendous amount of work to do in the two weeks I have left. Yesterday though, the professor told us the due date which is the day after the final (December 12th) which was about a week later than I thought the due date was going to be. I'm a bit more relaxed about that project now.
Moving into World Religions, I have an essay test due next week on Judaism/Christianity/Islam all combined because she ran out of time to talk about them. I think it's the two classes we spent on the introduction and the 2 we used on indigenous/native american religion. Whatever the case is, I need to write 4 essays, although the topics are fairly easy this time out. For example…name the 10 commandments and describe them. My theory is since we only had 4 exams and we were supposed to have 6, she wants another grade before the end of the semester.
And after that, the week after my 8 page paper on the various creation stories is due. Fun fun fun!
QotD: Vox Potluck
0If your Vox Neighborhood had a potluck dinner tonight, what dish, drink or dessert would you bring?
I'm bringing drinks. Nobody really wants to eat my cooking. All right…it's decent, but I'm not comfortable enough to make anything for anybody else.
I might be able to pull off cookies, but that's about it as far as my cooking skills go.
As far as drinks go, I'd probably bring a bottle of White Zinfandel wine of some sort since I know at least two of my neighbors enjoy it. If It's an all ages occasion, probably a jug of soda or something.
QotD: Today's Musical Horoscope
0What's your musical horoscope? (Put your player on shuffle and write down the first 10 songs that come up.)
Fairly busy this morning, but while this query is running I have a few minutes to answer this question. So here goes:
- Barenaked Ladies – Rule The World With Love
- Say Anything – Yellow Cat/Red Cat
- Rush – We Hold On
- Live – Where Fishes Go
- Symphony X – Seven
- Star One – High Moon (non live version)
- Blue Man Group – I Feel Love (Featuring Venus Hum)
- Porcupine Tree – She's Moved On
- Liquid Tension Experiment – State of Grace
- The Beatles – Polythene Pam
UPDATE: After looking at other people's results, I think I may possibly be the only person in the universe that lists songs with the band name first and the song title second. Weird.
Tired
0I'm exhausted this morning even though I went to bed early last night. I thought I had slept well too.
It's amazing how quickly one's mood can change. Last week I was reasonably happy, and suddenly this week I'm back to feeling crushed. End of the semester and all, lots of work to do. But I don't really feel like doing any of it. I still will of course, I'm just really tired of dealing with, well…everything.
Tonight I need to visit with my partner after class so we can work on our Software Engineering project, and I need to write a couple essays for World Religions somewhere in here. I really hate the end of the semester.
Soulsucking After Vacation Monday
0Mondays after a 4 day weekend are horrible. Which is why I refuse to answer today's Vox Hunt question. Because there's nothing good about Monday.
It started when I got up this morning. You see, my landlords are switching to a pellet stove for heat generation and they switched their side of the house yesterday and were going to do mine today. So, it got a bit chilly in there by the time I woke up. Nothing major, it was only down to 68 or so, which I'm fine with. But the fact that they're going to be coming into my place to do some work means I needed to clean up a little bit which is exactly what I want to do first thing in the morning.
I finished doing that and getting ready for work. I then made my lunch since I'm trying to not go home for lunch quite so much since my car doesn't get 30MPG anymore and gas prices shot up pretty quick there. Even though I live about 10 minutes from work, that travel adds up, so I'm trying to be better about staying in. Of course…I forgot my lunch on the counter as I'm walking out the door. Grrr…
And at the moment, I'm at work fighting with stuff that doesn't seem to want to work at all. And tonight I was supposed to go over to my partner's place to work on the Software Engineering project that's coming due in a couple weeks but he ended up having to work tonight.
Man, I miss that 4 day weekend.
