Fishy Flu

As I mentioned, my fish are having a bit of an issue with disease now in my main 20 gallon tank. The betta is fine, thankfully.

I had initially thought it was Ich, but after treating for it it eneded up not really helping. Over the past week I've lost 2 of my bleeding heart tetras with another one on the way out (I found him sitting upside down on one of the plants last night). I took the opportunity to observe him closely and it definitely looks like it's a fungal infection now. Of course I was sure about the Ich too…but anyway…I went out to Petsmart last night and picked up some more medication which I'm treating with now.

I've seperated the sick fish from the other ones in a little container floating in the water and I'm treating him along with the rest of the fish in hopes that he might get better, but it's not looking real good. He's kinda swimming on his side and not really moving very much. I have a feeling he'll be dead by the time I get home today.

Hopefully this actually ends up being what I think it is…this is getting very old.

I Need Roadies

It's that time again…time to catch up on what was going on with me this weekend.

Saturday was the usual hanging out with the friends day. I went out to their place, bringing Rock Band and my 360 along so that our band, The Awesome Sauces could go on tour again. I really need to get some road crew members to pack and unpack this stuff. But it's very fun playing, so I don't mind transporting the setup around. We played some Rock Band, obviously, watched some TV and generally hung out and had a very fun time doing so. And also got to have some homemade pumpkin bread that Wassy made up which was very awesome. (And it's even better the next day with tea)

Moving into Sunday I was determined to get some cleaning done around the house. My bedroom had again fallen into a total wasteland of stuff everywhere so I was determined to spend an hour or two and get as much cleaned up as I could. I ended up getting about 1/3rd of it taken care of. And I also finally went through my closet and dumped a bunch of old stuff that I hadn't taken out of there since I took it out of the moving box and put it in the closet 3 years ago. I went through a box of old computer games and programs, most of them DOS games or games that won't run on today's version of windows. I dumped pretty much everything except for 4. Then I went through the top of my closet and took out/organized a lot of my old computer crap that I thought I would use but never did. I have a lot of new found storage space now, which is desperately needed.

Trouble In Fishy Paradise

After about a year and a half of fish keeping, it had to happen eventually. But there's something wrong in my larger fish tank.

I noticed about a week or two ago that my bleeding heart tetras weren't eating, or were eating very little. I had initially attributed this to the fact that they were restless due to me removing one of their decorations that they hide under (It had served it's useful life and was just totally falling apart). Then I replaced that but still no change, making me think it was food related. But I tried a couple different types of food and still nothing.

A couple days ago, I noticed that one of my tetras was totally gone. I only seemed to have 4 left. I started to suspect that the real culprit was a diseas. Probably Ich, although they weren't breaking out with the telltale spots. They did seem like they were losing their apetite and breathing more heavily than they had in the past.

Then I came home last night to discover that one of my tetras was swimming aimlessly at the top of the tank, it's skin covered in what I think are white spots. So I think Ich is pretty much confirmed here. The little guy is probably going to die as there isn't much I can do to help him now…but I've started treating the tank for Ich in an effort to attempt to save the rest of the fish. Hopefully it really is Ich because it loosks like he's got a fungal infection too, which could be the main cause of the problem or it could be just a secondary effect due to how weak he is.

Only thing I can do is just sit and wait it out, really. Hopefully most of them make it through ok. This being my first fish emergency and all. I want to do what I can to save them, but I also don't want to over medicate because that will make the problem worse.

The brand new CD from Frost* is my currently anticpated album. Very soon! In fact, I should pre-order it…In 2006, I stupidly placed their last album, Milliontown in the lower part of my top albums of 2006 post. However, I have come to regret the decision and now Frost* is definitely one of my favorite bands. And very underground…so few people know about them…

Little Bit Of Excitement

Well, this morning certainly was different. I was getting ready for work when I got a call saying that there was a gas leak at the office and they were telling everybody not to come in, but to instead go to one of our other offices. It seems like the construction crew that was working on the sidewalk across the street from the building here totally ignored the neon yellow signs which informed them of a buried gas pipe.

Luckily, we have laptops, so somebody grabbed all the computers from our office and brought them out to our temporary dwellings. This was my first time being out there, so I was a little worried I wouldn't be able to locate it, but it ended up being pretty easy as it was right along the road I usually take to get to that area. Pretty nice in there, but I couldn't get my laptop to connect to their wireless network, so when the word came that the building was all clear, I packed up and headed back.

It made for a good time killer though! by the time I got back to my desk it was around 9:30-10:00

Great Lengths To Watch A Movie

Many apologies for the lapse in blogging. I'd like to say I was out partying because Obama won the election but I just haven't really felt like typing something up in a bit. Every time I thought of something I didn't have the time…well, anyway…enough excuses.  This is a post about Netflix.

Netflix has had Instant Watching for a while, allowing netflix users to stream a decent selection of movies and documentaries over the Internet along with your normal DVD rental activity. This has been restricted to only to Windows users, using Internet Explorer. Until recently that is. As a Mac user, I was happy to see that they had started testing a OS X version of the software. It works pretty well.

Except this Saturday. Wassy was over so she could get out of her apartment for a bit and get a change of scenery to do some work, and we decided to watch Immortal Beloved (which was a really great movie) on instant streaming. I started the movie up and it seemed to be going well, but then the aspect ratio got screwed up. There was much fiddling, but nothing could get it to work right. So I restarted into windows, thinking it was an OS X bug. A note about the way the Netflix streaming beta works. Once you opt in, you can't opt out and it changes your player software everywhere. So in windows, it was now doing the same thing.

I really wanted to watch the movie, so I was thinking of a way around it. Then I remembered my dad had a netflix account, and I probably knew what his password was going to be…so I tried it and it worked. At this point, my conscience took over and I decided to call my dad to make sure it was ok…but finally…we were able to watch the movie. All of this took about 20-30 minutes of screwing around to get it to go. But it was so worth it…

I haven't had that happen on any other movie since. It was just that one specific movie…other than that, I'm really happy with the new streaming experience.

I'm Sure You're Tired Of It But…Yes We Can!

I still can't believe it. I couldn't really believe it last night when it was happening, and I'm still having trouble processing it now. But the election is over and Barack Obama is going to be our new president.

As I was over at my friends last night watching the returns come in, I was cautiously optimistic because I knew what the polls were saying. And when Ohio went for Obama, I knew it it was over and Obama had won.

It's quite interesting witnessing history in real time. I don't know quite how to describe the relief that I felt that finally we knew who won and that person was the guy who I think has the mindset to bring the US back to the modern world after 8 years of pissing it off. And there was joy too. Hearing his victory speech and knowing that this was the best thing to happen to American politics in quite some time.

I know that just because he is elected, the country won't return to the right track over night. He's inherited a boatload of problems, a bad economy, two wars and crumbling relations with other countries…it's going to be tough. But I think that this is a step in the right direction. I hope people understand that he's not going to be some messiah that comes down from on high and snaps his fingers to make everything OK. That's what he's going to have to fight now. But I think he can do it.

Also, as an aside, I really liked McCains concession speech. It was the first time in a long time that we've heard the real McCain, not the fake one that's been running around campaigning for the last 2 years. That was the McCain I might have voted for.

The only thing that's really, really dissapointing about last night is that, on the night that can serve as such a symbol of overcoming prejuidice and bigotry, so many states passed ballot measures promoting a different kind of prejudice and bigotry…bans on same sex marriage. Why can people not see that this issue is just as bad as racial discrimination? That interracial marriage was banned for exactly the same reason, that it was a "sin" against "god". Totally ignoring the fact that a good portion of the country doesn't believe in that god.

It's a very sour note on what should have been a day celebrating the strides we've made as a people. Instead, it shows very clearly just how much farther we need to go before we can truly live up to the phrase that had been set down at the very founding of this country. "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness". All men. Not white men, not black men, not straight men, not gay men. ALL. MEN. (and women of course)

I have never been prouder of my country, and yet at the same time I have never been so disappointed.

QotD: Make it Count

It's Election Day! How was your voting experience?

Same old ladies. Same old lever voting machines, no lines, no waiting.

Well there was some waiting. Due to the old ladies. In New York (oneida county at least), they have these books where you tell them your name, they find it in the book and you sign next to your signature from the last time you voted as verification. Then they let you go vote.

Well…this particular lady couldn't spell. Despite the fact that my parents had already gone and voted before I did, she didn't know where to find my last name. Talking to my parents, they had quite the same experience. Eventually it was found, even though she thought I was my dad (who had already voted) but…well…I got all signed in and my vote was cast.

And what a relief it was too. I'm so glad I'm able to actually go do something finally, after 2 years of waiting to cast the vote I did an hour ago.

QotD: Trading Sides

Are you voting for the party that you're registered for?

First off…I'm going to be very glad when tuesday comes. I'm getting extremely tired of the back and forth on this. We need to just get this over with! It's been like…2 years of campaigning!! I'm very glad it's tomorrow. I'm not going to be able to take much more of this.

I am registered as not being a member of a political party because I don't really believe in having a blanket position that I'd vote for regardless of the individuals running. I much prefer to look at what they believe in and pick the person who most closely matches what my positions on the issues are. (Disclaimer, the following post is probably a little disorganized. Also note, I'm keeping this general. I could go into a long comparison of the two candidates and my own values, but I don't think that would be terribly helpful to anybody at this point. So this is just in general.)

That having been said, this year I'm going to be voting pretty much straight Democrat. The Republicans that are running both nationally and locally have done nothing to show that what they stand for is in any way, shape or form the set of ideas that I want representing me in my government. From Gay Marriage, to health care, to taxes, to abortion…count me out.

And specifically regarding McCain…if the McCain that was running now was the same McCain that was running in 2000, I would be a lot more tempted to vote for him. I LIKED that McCain. But this McCain is not the same guy, no matter what he says. Between 2000 and 2008, he performed a total 180 on almost every major issue. And I don't see that as a problem usually…because I think everyone should be able to change their mind as the situation dictates. Nothing worse than going into an ever changing world with a bunch of ideas that are set in stone. But it was obvious that he was changing his viewpoints in order to appeal more broadly to the republican base and win the nomination in 2008.

Nothing speaks louder to this than his recent attacks on Obama regarding "socialism" and "spreading the wealth" when he himself is on record prior to his reinvention saying that the wealthy can afford to pay a little more in taxes. Which is exactly what Obama is saying now, and what he's being attacked for.

Obama on the other hand, in my opinion has better judgment, and is more willing to hear and consider opposing viewpoints. He also adheres more closely to my idea of what needs to be done to turn this sinking ship of a country around and restore some of that respect we've lost in international communities due to our country's actions. I believe his ideas are more suited to a globally focused, ever changing world.We need somebody right now that's going to think and consider as much input as possible before making a decision, instead of just flying off the handle and going from the gut (See suspension of campaign to rush to washington to help the bailout bill and the Palin VP pick). So that's why I'm voting for him.

But forget my opinion. That's just me. The only wrong opinion is not voting at all because that's the only way our system is going to work. Go vote! I don't care who you vote for…just VOTE.

Spoooooooky Weekend

This weekend was quite fun with lots of friend based activities happening. 

Friday we (we being Wassy and Jay) went out to a local haunted house (semi local, about an hour away), which turned out to be quite fun. They have multiple attractions there and we decided to do two of them. Intensity and Creepy Cabins. Intensity was the scarier of the two. It was totally dark inside with a couple actors wandering around and whispering creepy things and growling and such. It was set up like a maze as well so it was easy to get separated. Very fun. Creepy Cabins was more traditional-haunted house-y. More creepy than scary, which I guess was part of the name. But overall it was a fun evening. After that we went back to their place and hung out for a bit. I also discovered the joy that is Jelly Belly Jelly Beans. And the horrible goodness of a movie that is The Toxic Avenger. It was on just as I was leaving their place and I caught it on Netflix instant watching when I got home. Best…B Movie…EVER.
Saturday, I headed back over there for some Rock Band and other general hanging out stuff. We ended up starting a band called The Awesome Sauces. I created a glammed out rocker named Biff as the lead guitarist. Wassy made a anorexic drummer chick that looked like she was about to snap in half. Jay made Gus…the lead vocalist/sideshow freak. He looks like a wolf man in a orange and green suit with pinstriped pants. We played for an awful long time and it was very fun. Rock Band is very awesome and I'm glad I got it. I can see myself bringing my 360 over there quite often for a while.
Dinner for the night was Pot Roast, which I've never had before ever, to my knowledge anyway. I thought it was quite good and was pretty much the exact opposite of all of my experiences involving non-ground-beef. Very soft and mouth melty. 
Sunday was the traditional lazy day, so not much to talk about. I played a lot of Fallout 3 for the XBox 360 which I'm really enjoying more than I thought I might. The first person-ness of it is more manageable than I was thinking at first. Really fun game with a good sense of humor. I'm glad I got it through gamefly.
