Revolutionary Road

0

Friday and Saturday of this week were spent just hanging out with my friends. Some much needed hanging out after this week's longness. Not much in the way of activities to report except for going out to the movies on Saturday to see Revolutionary Road.

In short, it was a really good move although very depressing. Not much of a feel-good type flick at all. But it was very very well done. Leonardo DiCaprio was robbed out of getting a nomination for his performance in this movie as he was REALLY good. As was Kate Winslet. Also, John, one of the supporting characters was AWESOME.

Just a warning as there's some minor spoilers going down in this next paragraph.

I think the thing that most drew me to the movie was how I found I could identify with the position of the characters. Especially the angle of working a job you don't really like because you're afraid to take a chance and see where it gets you. Because that's basically me.  And there was a lot of other stuff in there that reminded me very much of the stuff that my friends are going through right now. It just hit a little close to home.

On the subject of hitting things, we had the most obnoxious audience imaginable. Old people. Lots of them. There were two trouble areas in particular. One, a group of women who wouldn't shut up, making comments like "Is she going to <insert action here>???" over and over as if it was their living room. Also there was one man who was just annoying. First of all, he was SINGING ONE OF THE SONGS in the movie. OUT LOUD. WHY??? I couldn't believe what I was hearing!! Second, during one of the most powerful and climactic parts of the film, he blurts out "SHE'S GOING TO <edited to avoid spoilers>!" which kinda took me out of the moment. Then, just at the climax of the entire movie he gets up and walks out of the theater only to return after he misses the single biggest event that happens in the movie. He then begins to ask loudly about what he missed.

I hate people. But the movie was really good. Highly recommended.

Vox Hunt: Opening Doors

I got this for signing up for the official Dream Theater UK Fanclub, Voices UK. I'm not in the UK…but it's the only official english language fan club for the band. I only really did it for the special fan club CDs that they send out every year.  I've let my subscription lapse due to trying to curb my spending habits…and I haven't had the same enthusasim for following Dream Theater that I have had in the past. I blame Sytematic Chaos…

I really hope the new album is better. I have a feeling that what I'm looking for in music and what they're providing are two things that growing ever further apart. We shall see…

Winter Can Go To Hell, And So Can Back Pain

0

Up here in New York State, we've just finished up dealing with the latest in this years seemingly endless supply of winter storms. This time we got about 6-7 inches dumped on us yesterday, with a  little more falling now it looks like. Nothing too bad.

The roads were fairly decent yesterday coming into work and a little messy going home. But the real problem came when I tried to pull into my driveway. Due to the snow plows keeping the roads clear, there was a large snow drift at the end of my driveway and I didn't quite realize exactly how large until I started driving through it. Now my Rogue is good in the snow and has a lot of ground clearance, but…not THAT much. It ended up getting stuck in the driveway. Thankfully I was able to get myself unstuck (Go go AWD) but I ended up having to park in my landlord's driveway until they could get a plow over.

And now for the back pain part of the post…last night my back started hurting, just below the neck, between the shoulder blades. It varies in severity depending on how I move but it's mostly just annoying. I was hoping that it would feel better this morning but instead I think it feels slightly worse. May have been how I was sleeping, potentially. Ah well… I'm just starting to get old and creaky.

QotD: I'll get around to it one day…

0

What do you always say you will do but never actually get around to doing?

Submitted by Beautifully Broken.

I would really, really like to have the time to spend working on learning how to play piano/keyboard. I even went and bought one last year, but more important learning things came up regarding my career and I never really progressed much beyond the very basic basics of things.

It's something I would really like to do though…there's just not enough hours in the day to fit everything that I want to do in, and not go totally crazy due to lack of relaxation time.

Vox Hunt: Favorite Character from Alice in Wonderland

0

Lewis Carroll was born on this day in 1832. To celebrate his birthday, show us your favorite character from Wonderland.

Lewis Carroll probably wouldn't be too happy about this version of the story, but I'm going to have to give a strange answer here and say Myuki-Chan, from a Manga version of the classic tale.

However, if I were to have to pick one from the actual story, I would go with the Mad Hatter. Because he's…weird. Very weird.

I'm A Wuss

0

So I took this quiz to see how many 90 year old people I could take in a fight. I knew I was going to score pretty badly, but I figured that I could at least take out 5 or 6…or 10 maybe if I got lucky. But, well…

*hangs head in shame*

I am a total wuss though. Not quite in the category of passing out at the sight of blood, but I get really squeamish. Especially when I'm watching movies where unpleasant things happen to certain characters. Even in medical dramas and stuff. if it's the least bit gross…or if there's needles or poking (especially of the eyes)…you can just count me out.

My friends have told me that if there is ever a zombie apocalypse, I'd be a liability…

Cleaning Quest Update

0

I mentioned in one of my past weekend posts that I was going to try to put more effort into tidying up after myself to avoid allowing my apartment to become so horribly messy that it takes me hours to clean up all at once instead of a few minutes here and there every day.

Well, I am pleased to say that this effort is still continuing. My bedroom is still passable without climbing gear and my living area is fairly tidy. Could use a little work here and there, but I'm making sure that I'm not just letting things sit out forever after I'm done using them. Also helping is trying to take care of the dishes every night instead of letting things sit in the sink for a while out of pure laziness. Oh, and cleaning up the kitchen while I'm waiting for stuff to cook instead of leaving it for after.

It's an ongoing process, but one that seems to be holding up, more or less so far. Lets see how long that continues to be true…

Super Heroic Weekend

0

First off, I do realize that I've been slacking off on the blog posting recently. I'm going to try to spend a little more time on it so I get more than 2 posts a week in…but we'll see how that goes.

Second, this weekend was very good on the scale of weekend goodness. It was double XP weekend in City of Heroes (meaning you leveled at twice the rate), so my friends and I had decided that we were going to meet up (meaning I went over to their apartment) and play together for a while, with chicken salsa tacos and some wine for good measure. It was just a really cool relaxing day.

In the afternoon we watched Atonement while Jay was taking a nap (he wasn't feeling good) and Wassy was working. I really enjoyed the movie, although I thought the middle section dragged a little bit on the first viewing. But the twist at the end shed new light on the entire story and I would like to see it again with that information in mind. After the movie, it was taco time and then we got into playing City of Heroes. The setup was a little cramped, with Jay at his desk and Wassy and I next to each other on the couch, using their coffee table (which folds out into a nice table for when you're sitting down on the couch) for our laptops. That setup went about as well as I expected (Wassy enjoys messing with people playing games, so there was lots of randomly pressed keys on my keyboard as the evening progressed), but no big deal, really. It was an extremely fun time and I hope we can do that again at some point in the future.

Sunday however, was a day of me struggling with Windows. I had put the beta of Windows 7 on my Macbook but, as I discovered Saturday, City of Heroes didn't really like it all that much…probably related to drivers. So I decided I would go back to XP. From not reading my XP install DVD (it's a long story, but basically because of how the macbook works, I have to burn a DVD with windows XP + a couple folders from my windows 98 CD so it sees it as an upgrade disc) to not being able to find my 98 CD so I could make another one and then having issues with video card drivers…what started as a project that was supposed to take a couple hours ended up taking most of the day.

Man, I hate windows sometimes.

Ultra Hanging Out

0

Last night I went over to my friends apartment for some mid week hanging out. And massive hanging out it was…we didn't really have anything planned except to grab dinner at an authentic indian restaurant in the area and hang out after doing…whatever.

The Indian food was good. My friends got me to try it a few weeks ago, and I ended up liking it well enough to return there. It's set up as an all you can eat buffet type deal so you can try a little bit of everything to find something you  might like. They also have great service, making sure your water is refilled and pointing out foods you might enjoy and serving things right to the table…inclding Naan…mmm…Naan… I think we scared one of the waiters when he brought over a basket of Naan, asked if we would like some and Wassy said "YES!" I think he was just going to give us each a piece but he decided to just drop the whole basket off and practically ran away..scared for his life.

Another interesting note is as we were finishing up, I had a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and one of my bosses was standing there (he is of Indian descent, so I suppose I should have expected he would eat there) wondering what I was doing. Aparantly, I didn't strike him as somebody who would experiment with indian food. It seems he was wrong.

After that we went back to my friends apartment and hung out. Massive hanging out. Wassy and I were playing Star Ocean Second Evolution for the PSP and watching TV while Jay was doing laundry…just sort of a normal hanging out sort of situation. At one point there was a trip to the grocery store…

Just some nice relaxation in the middle of the week..which as always, feels like it's very, very long…

QotD: Inauguration Day

0

President-elect Barack Obama is being sworn into office today. Where are you watching the events of this historic day unfold?

Well, I'm late here again (as this happened yesterday) but here's my answer: I decided that I would go home and watch the swearing-in ceremony as it happened considering I normally have lunch from 11:30-12:30, plus or minus a half hour.

I thought it was really cool being able to watch that happen live and I was extremely pleased with what I heard in his inaugural address. Just to copy and paste a section:

As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our
safety and our ideals. Our founding fathers … our found fathers,
faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure
the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood
of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not
give them up for expedience's sake. And so to all the other peoples and
governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the
small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend
of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of
peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and
communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances
and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot
protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they
knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security
emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the
tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

After the past 8 years of the thinking that the United States didn't have to work with the community of nations in the world, that we were somehow above all that…it's refreshing to hear this sort of talk coming from the man who is the face of our government. We need to start working with the world, not forcing the world to work our way. That may have worked in the past, but the situation has changed and we've got to change with it, not cling to old ideas until it's too late.

I know everything isn't instantly going to get fixed. President Obama can't possibly meet all the expectations that have been heaped on his shoulders. It's going to take a long time and a lot of hard work to undo the damage that has been done. He's probably not going to be able to meet all of his campaign promises because the world is in a constant state of change.

That's ok though. It's not the programs I voted for or the tax proposals or the health care plan…it's the kind of thinking that Obama represents, a person willing to listen to all sides of the debate, who isn't afraid of having people who may disagree with him offer their opinions, even in his cabinet. A person who knows that in order to make America safer, we need to repair our broken reputation around the world and use military force only as a last resort. A person who understands technology and has people on staff that understand how it can be used to make the country more transparent. Heck, have you seen the new whitehouse.gov? It has a blog for goodness sake!!

So we'll see what happens. I can't remember feeling this good about the potential direction of the country in a long time. Well, probably ever because I was still in high school when Bush was elected and I didn't really care about this stuff as much as I do now. I feel like the country is starting to slowly to come around to progressing down the right road. The future will tell how many steps we take, if at all.

Here's hoping that history remembers Barack Obama fondly.
