Wedding Report

0

Just got back from my cousins wedding reception and, contrary to how I thought the night was going to go, I had a blast.

The Wedding was kinda boring…long. Lots of sitting and standing. Not being an overtly religious person, I’m not too fond of long drawn out ceremonies, but I guess this one wasn’t as long as it could have been. As the priest said, it could have been a wedding mass instead of a wedding ceremony…

The wait between the ceremony and the reception was kinda long too. I went over to my parents house and played StarFox Command on my Nintendo DS to kill time.

Then the reception. Lots of fun stuff. My parents and I were split up at two different, but neighboring, tables. My cousin set up this table specifically so all the troublemaker cousins could sit together and we had a blast. We had a candle war with my parents table with the centerpiece candle. It started since their candle was blown out when we got there. But after the waiters re-lit it, my cousin Heather’s husband Scott went over and blew it out. They then swapped candles with us so that we had the unlit one and they had a lit one. Then they got up to hit the buffet and they gave their candle to some friends at another table. We bribed them to blow it out…and got ours relit. Fun times.

More fun stuff happened, but I’d be typing all night if I typed it all out…so you’re going to have to just get by with that.

Oh, just one more thing. We were the only table with Red Hot and Ketchup. I didn’t realize you could ask for that stuff in a reception setting :)

QotD: Weekend Plans

0

What are your plans for the weekend?

Today I’m going to be spending most of the day at my cousins wedding/reception. Fun! The ceremony starts in the afternoon and the reception starts at 7 or something. Going to be a very, very long day.

Sunday I have no real plans at the moment, but I’m sure I’ll think of something soon :)

QotD: On Podcasts

0

Do you listen to podcasts?  Are there any you’d recommend?
Inspired by Alex.

Weird, I was just posting on another forum about what podcasts I listen to.

Yep, I do listen to podcasts. Have for about a year now ever since I discovered This Week In Tech. I have a hookup in my car so I can listen to my iPod though my stereo, so I usually listen to these while driving to work/class. Most of my podcasts are tech oriented, so I’ll start with them. All of these are available on iTunes

The one I look forward to most of all is CNET’s Buzz Out Loud, the CNET Podcast of Interterminate Length. It’s a daily news podcast, but they put an entertaining spin on it. They’re very interactive with the listeners too, taking calls, mp3 questions and e-mails which they select some and play them at the end of the show.

Another tech news podcast I listen to is What’s New Now? from ZD-Net and PC Magazine. This one’s more for the Patrick Norton factor rather than anything else interesting about it. They do come up with some good views usually, but it’s not one I look forward to showing up in iTunes.

There’s the podcasts connected to the TWiT network. Of those I regularly listen to This Week In Tech (General Tech discussion), Inside the Net (web 2.0 stuff), Windows Weekly (Windows news), MacBreak Weekly (Mac/Apple news) and FLOSS Weekly (Interviews with the people in the open source community).

I have two other podcasts devoted to Apple/Mac stuff, which are the MacCast and the Unofficial Apple Weblog Podcast. I generally get all my Apple news from there.

Bordering on the tech stuff is video games. For that I turn to the PC Gamer Podcast from, as you might expect, the people over at PC Gamer.

The last two Podcasts are the Barenaked Ladies Podcast when they actually decide to release one. Those guys are always funny. I also listen to the Onion Radio News which is a daily, short 30-60 second podcast reading off a funny satire news story from The Onion.

Ok, Video podcasts! Now that I’ve got a video iPod, I’m getting more into these. Of course, you need to have Ask a Ninja. If you haven’t seen that one…GO! CHECK IT OUT NOW! Then there’s the Strong Bad Emails one which takes the SBEmail’s from homestarrunner.com and turns them into video so you can watch them on the go. Finally, CommandN, which is a tech news centered video podcast, but with a Web 2.0/apple slant.

QotD: My Earliest Memory

0

What is your earliest memory?
Submitted by Megan.

The first thing that comes to mind is kindergarten. A lot of stuff in kindergarten. Like coloring this book which was supposed to show opposites, or staying outside in the snow long past when recess was over playing with a friend in the snow.

But that stuff isn’t interesting is it?

I remember being out sick for a while in, I believe, second grade. We had some experiments for science that involved making a windmill by sticking a pin through the eraser of a pencil. My homework got sent home with the pencil included. My mom didn’t read the instructions and sharpened it. We got to that part and I started freaking out because she sharpened the “science pencil”. Freaking out = crying about it because I thought this pencil was one of a kind. Eventually my mom had to take me to see the teacher so she could tell me it was OK.

Ah, the wonders of youth.

Thus ends my embarrassing story of the day.

We Have A Second Floor?

0

I was walking across the street to the Pharmacy just a few minutes ago and I went to look back at the building that houses the place where I work and something odd occurred to me.

We have a second floor.

It’s not something I think about very much, considering I can’t ever recall seeing a set of stairs that leads up there. It’s not an attic because it’s got a full number of windows running all the way around. So I’ve worked here for around 5 years or so part time and full time, and still I have no idea what’s on the second floor. Why aren’t we using it? We certainly could use the space…

Could it be a secret staging point for a plan of telecommunications world domination? Is it just not finished? Haunted? Does some sort of mythological beast live up there, a grue perhaps?

Somehow I get the feeling I’ll never know. Or if I do learn what it’s for, they’ll have to kill me.

What, It’s Not Thursday?

0

I sure started today off on the right foot. I went though my entire morning routine thinking it was Thursday. Until I looked at the clock on my MacBook and it send Wednesday. Arrrgh. Add one more day to my countdown until the weekend then. Wednesday is evil. Like dentists.

Just so this post isn’t me complaining, I heard about an awesome plugin for Firefox yesterday on Inside The Net. It takes a google search, splits the page in half and runs a wikipedia search for the same terms on the other half of the page. It’s called Googlepedia and it works in Firefox 1.5 and the release candidates of 2.

Dentists Are Pure Evil!

0

I went for my 6 month cleaning yesterday and I swear these people learn how to inflict as much pain as possible on your mouth as a required class in dental school. Well, actually the person I got yesterday wasn’t too bad…

Anyway, I need to go back in November because I’ve got a cavity that needs looking at. I think. They were a bit hazy when explaining it to me because there was a billing crisis where someone hadn’t paid their bill and owed like $1000+ or something. Anyway…I need to go back. Blast!

Midterm Aftermath

0

Just a quick update on the history midterm. I think I did pretty well. Ended up being pretty easy compared to what I was expecting. All of the “Identify these items by writing a paragraph” questions were from the later parts of the semester that I knew really well. Lucked out on that one.

After the test I went over to Barnes and Noble and picked up the Third book in the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, The Dragon Reborn. If you’ve somehow missed this series and you’re interested in classic fantasy type novels, then this is a really great series of books so far. I also picked up the first volume of the Penny Arcade collection. The creators commentary for each cartoon really makes the book even funnier.

Man, I go to Barnes and Noble so often these days, I need to look into getting their membership card thing. I’d probably end up saving a bunch, considering how often I find myself there.

QotD: How To Kick A Cold

0

What do you do to get rid of a cold or flu?
Submitted by ashenflowers.

Why don’t you tell me? I’ve been trying to kick this thing for weeks.

I generally just take it easy, down some cold medication, lots of cough drops, and lots of fluids. No home brew remedies or anything like that. Obviously my system doesn’t work real well…

All Studied Up

0

I finished going through the rest of the study guide for my History Midterm on my lunch today. I think I’m all set for this thing.

Also, this was the first time I had brought my MacBook Pro to work in order to get some homework done. I expected to at least get a couple comments, but nothing. Oh well. Better for me since I want to avoid talking to people as much as humanly possible. I don’t need to hear how well somebody son is doing in science class simply because we’re around the same age. I DON’T KNOW YOUR SON! NOR DO I CARE IF HE JUST GOT A JOB AT WAL-MART!

Er, sorry…not sure what got into me there.
