QotD: If I Were a Teacher…

0

If you had to teach something, what would you teach?

I would teach people a course on why they shouldn't ask me to teach them anything. I'm really not very good a teaching people things. I'm more of a show-er. As in: "Move out of the way and just let me do it!!"

I'm not a very good teacher at all. I can't describe how you do something. I'm much better at showing somebody how to do something and them figuring it out from there. But ask me to describe the steps is took to get the end result is a recipe for disaster. Especially computer-related stuff. I tend to overthink it and give more information than necessary and that screws up the actual intent of the lesson…

I just don't do teaching very well.

QotD: Unexpected Dinner Guests

0

You have four unexpected guests showing up for dinner in less than an hour, you haven't been to the store in days, and you want to impress them with a delicious meal. What do you serve them?

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with a side of corn covered with dijon mustard? Might be able to swing some chesseburgers depending on what I have on hand, but that's pushing it pretty far.

I'm not usually in a position to feed 4 unexpected guests right after I've been to the store, let alone days after…and on less than an hours notice? Forget about it…

Ok, tip for any potential future unexpected guests of mine: Do not give
me less than an hour's notice and expect a hot meal to be waiting for
you! You probably will become a very unwelcome unexpected guest at that point.

QotD: Hamburgers vs. Cheeseburgers

0

Hamburgers or cheeseburgers?

I'm a cheeseburger person. I find a plain hamburger to be sorta bland
and I need that bit of cheese there. Well, unless, perhaps it is some
kind of specialty cheeseburger. But if we're talking about just the bun
and a burger, I'm going to want to slap some cheese on there.

jQuery…Why Didn't I Do This Earlier???

0

Geeky post warning. This is programming related.

I finally got around to playing with jQuery last night and I'm left wondering why the heck I didn't look at it earlier. jQuery, basically makes javascript programming so much easier. I had always been a little hesitant to leap into javascript because I never really got the hang of it which limits me somewhat when it comes to web development.

But now, I think I'm going to take the leap into learning more about this stuff because jQuery takes a lot of the scary out of javascript. It makes it a lot more managable and takes care of any potential browser bugs. I was playing around some last night and doing things I couldn't even begin to figure out when I last tried to do something with javascript.

I'm hooked. I need to find a good book. jQuery rocks!

Dollhouse

0

I finally got around to watching the first episode of Joss Whedon's new show Dollhouse last night via Hulu. In fact it was a Hulu commercial on during House that reminded me of the fact I needed to watch it.

If you have not seen it the basic premise, as far as I understand it, is that there's a group of young women called "Dolls" who have had their personalities wiped for the purposes of being able to be implanted with various other personalities. These Dolls are hired out to do various jobs with support from their ever changing abilities and personalities. After they're done, they get wiped back into a clean state and await the next job. All of this is, of course, highly illegal. The show focuses on one of these Dolls, named Echo.

The first episode was…intriguing. There's a lot of potential for good stuff happening and there's enough mystery where they can really uncover some interesting plot twists along the way. I haven't watched the second episode yet, but people have mentioned that it's even better than the first one is.

However, this show being on FOX, who has an itchy trigger finger when it comes to show cancelation has me worried. Especially since it's Joss Whedon show…but the ratings seem decent. I just hope they let the show grow a bit before they think about canning it (RIP Firefly…RIP…)

The Oscars: A Review

0

Last night was The Oscars, and as has become a tradition for
me I watched it with Wassy and Jay this year
again. The new part was that instead of watching it long distance as per usual,
I went over to their place and watched it with them, along with a bloomin onion
from Outback and a couple glasses of wine. It was a very enjoyable evening.

There was a little bit of worry involved in this year's ceremony since it was
revealed they would be a little bit different than they had been in the past.
Which was good because there's a ton of fluff built into the ceremony which
caused them to play off the winners very quickly and still run over time. But
it's scary because they could have screwed it up.

Another scary thing was the selection of Hugh Jackman as the host. I saw that
and thought "What the hell???" but as it turned out, it was a VERY
good decision. His opening number was..incredible. I'm trying so very hard to
find a copy of that somewhere and not being successful at it. We were
practically rolling on the floor laughing.

The actual changes to the ceremony were very positive. They got rid of a lot of
the overly pretentious montages that the oscars have become known for, instead
keeping them limited to shorter pieces highlighting the films of the year. Another
winning idea was to not let the Academy president or the MPAA guy or whoever
talk. It's always boring and it always takes FOREVER. Also in the positive
changes department: each original song nominee was played in a medley and they
combined the song from Wall-E and one of the Slumdog Millionaire songs in a
very neat way

They also redid how they talked about the best actress/actor nominees by
bringing out former winners and spending time talking about each nominee and
what they did with their role. It was very classy and really celebrated the
performances that were nominated. Very inclusive.

The one thing I could have done without was the performance number about the
Musicals. It was very schmaltzy and a couple minutes too long…but if that was
the worst of it, I'm a happy camper. the ordering of the awards was very
strange too. They stuck best supporting actress up front and then a bunch of
other stuff and best supporting actor about an hour and a half in.

As far as the actual awards…I'm glad Slumdog didn't sweep entirely. It was
getting a little boring knowing they were going to win as soon as their name
was called for being nominated. I'm a little disappointed at Wall-E not winning
best original screenplay as I really think it was well written, especially
challenging for a movie with so little dialog and characters that, by
definition, have a difficult time expressing emotions via expression. So much
of the movie was in the writing. No surprise they won the animated feature
award though. I like Jack Black's statement as he was presenting on how he
makes more money on his voice work than his live action stuff because he stars
in a single Dreamworks movie and then takes the money he gets from that and
bets it all on Pixar to win an Oscar. Complete with a  "Yeah!!!"
cheer when Wall-E was announced as the winner.

I'm very glad Kate Winslet won an oscar for her performance in The Reader. I
sorta think Revolutionary Road was a hair better but she was so very good in
both of them so I'm glad she got an award for something. I liked her acceptance
speech too…she strikes me as a very genuine individual.

I'm also really glad that Heath Ledger won for his portrayal of The Joker. I
was afraid that the fact that he had died would dissuade people from voting for
him, but his performance was more deserving than anything else in the
supporting actor category by far. I think they should have showed a little clip
of his performance after he won, like on the Golden Globes, but it was a really
cool moment. Of course now we need to deal with people saying "He wouldn't
have won if he was alive" which is absolute bull.

So in conclusion, good ceremony this year, and a good Oscar-watching party to
watch it at.

QotD: I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream!

0

What's your favorite flavor of ice cream?

As of right now, it's Ben & Jerry's Cinnamon Bun. That ice cream is so good, it should be totally illegal because I can't resist having some if I have it in the freezer. Which is why I don't have it in my freezer right now.

A second is Ben & Jerry's Mint Chocolate Cookie. Very nice mint ice cream and excellent cookie to ice cream ratio. Mmm…

If you want a standard flavor, I'd have to go with strawberry. (Bryers specifically) Has to be real strawberry, not fake strawberry.

How Much Snow?!?

0

Not much happening over the past couple days worth mentioning really. I've just been working on my programming stuff and playing some Tomb Raider: Anniversary that I just got through Gamefly. So it's been all quiet on this front.

We're experiencing another winter event though, relatively minor. It's only worth mentioning because this is the second time in a row that I've scheduled a haircut for a day where we get at least 2-3 inches of snow. I think I'm going to stop scheduling haircuts and then it might possibly be spring.

The title of this post comes from the weather forecast located on the right there.

1 to 20 inches???? I'm pretty sure that has got to be a typo, but…geeze. If it was actually true that's like the ultimate in weather man cop outs.

"It's going to snow tomorrow. Could be 1 inch, could be 2 feet. Hell if I know!"

Long Weekend Wrapup

0

Here in the US, Monday was president's day which means that some people have a 3 day weekend. And this year for some strange reason, I was one of those people. We usually don't get president's day off (at least I can't ever remember us getting it off) so I was a bit surprised when they came up with the holiday list this year.

So my 3 day weekend started by going out to the movies with my friends. We went off to see Coraline in 3D and it was very good. Excellent visual style, engaging story and very nice use of the 3D factor. There were no old people talking like the last couple movies which was a very, very good change of pace. And it was a nice non-thinking type movie after having the brain work overtime while watching Revolutionary Road and The Reader. Highly recommended.

I also received an omelet lesson on how to make them all fluffy and good. So that should help my breakfast for dinner aspirations.

Sunday was a half relaxing half working day where I did my chores and a little bit of C++ programming and then I did some relaxing City of Heroes playing. I also spent a good portion of the day watching episodes of Firefly on DVD. Wassy mentioned Sci-fi had Serenity on the other day which made me want to watch Firefly and Serenity again. Which I did.

Monday was intended to be a programming day but instead of working on C++ stuff like I had intended, I ended up spending a good portion of the day (while watching firefly) moving Wassy's website from one host to another. It took about 2 hours longer than I expected it to take, but it ended up all going smoothly in the end. After that I was pretty much programmed out, so I just relaxed for the rest of the evening.

Hoping I can get through another chapter in my C++ book this week and maybe get started on a small little project with practical applications.

Technology QotD: The Kindle 2 is here

0

Amazon unveiled Kindle 2, a sleeker version of its electronic reading device, that it will being shipping on February 24th. Would you want to own this $359 gadget? Why or why not?

I really want an eBook reader. I think I would read enough where it would be worth it, and it's just such a convenient little thing to carry around wherever. The screens are totally awesome, there's actually books available now that I would want to read on on them.

There's only one small problem…the price. $359 is A LOT of books that I could have bought. And the books are often not discounted despite the fact that they cost the publishers less money to produce (they're just data after all) and exactly $0 to ship around. So if they want me to pay $359 and then buy books on top of that for full price…they've got a bit of a surprise waiting for them!

I'll start really considering getting one of these once the price gets down towards the $100 price point. $359 is WAYYY too much.
