What makes a "good" pet?

Low maintenance is always a plus! Ok, let me frame this question in light of what I'd be looking for if I was to get a dog or a cat.

I don't like active animals. By active I mean animals that have almost unlimited energy reserves that spend most of their time running around, jumping up and down, tearing through things, etc. I like nice, calm pets that don't consider biting or scratching to be "playing". As such, pretty much any puppy or kitten is going to be out of my consideration very early on in the process.

Boiled right down to it, I'd want a companion, not a playmate. Calm…gentle…easy to predict. And preferably a pet that doesn't get into everything and make lots of messes. But I'm probably pushing my luck on the last one there.
