Please Don't Make Me Climb The Hill Again…

0

I haven't posted in a few days, I know…But I have good reasons!

First…Sunday I spent the day out in Sterling, NY at the Sterling Renaissance Festival with my sister. We've been going every year for the past 3 or 4 years (I forget). It's a lot of fun usually and this year was no exception. It was Pirate Weekend, but unfortunately, there wasn't as much pirate happenings as their normally was. I actually noticed fewer performers walking the streets and talking to people than there were in past years.

The fun started early when I got to my sister's place at 7 and knocked on the door…no answer. Knocked again. No answer. I was afraid that was going to happen since her AIM away message still said something like "Goodnight!" I figured she was sleeping. So I called her up. She had just woken up. Good thing we built in some extra time. We still got there really early.
The shows were good, but it was really hot when we had to sit in the sun. Wasn't so bad in the shade though, and there was a nice breeze blowing through at times. We also discovered the secret of getting drinks: there's one drink vendor towards the bottom of the hill that's not quite as busy as the other ones. The title of this post actually, is in reference to the giant freaking hill this thing is built on. Everything you want to see is always up the hill, no matter where you are. It's very strange.

We were afraid that they weren't going to have their normal opening ceremony, but that was only a misprint in the schedule it seems, which was good…I guess because I was called a squinty eyed pirate during it. Arrr.

We hit up some of the normal shows, like Daniel, Duke of Danger (a grown man trying to hurt himself in amusing and misguided ways) and Don Juan and Miguel (two shows of comedy, adventure and sword fighting this year) which were good. We also saw some new stuff, such as Emrys Fleet's Rat Extravaganza!  Which was…odd…very odd. Indescribably odd, but funny. At one point my sister turned to me and said "Why is this funny??" while she was laughing. That was probably the best part of the show.

We also went to see Giacomo The Jester and his juggling, magic and rope walking act. He was really funny. Stole a shirt off a guy in the audience in order to work one of his magic tricks. Before the show, he also balanced the pretzel rack (there were street vendors wanding around and selling pretzels, cookies (which were AWESOME this year) and nuts before the shows) on his nose because the pretzel guy said that he would do it during his sales pitch. I was too slow to get a picture of that, but we were sitting close enough where I was afraid I was going to get a face full of pretzels if he dropped it.

We skipped the Joust last year since you usually need to get to the show at least 30-40 minutes early to get a seat in the shade, but this year since some of the stuff we normally like seeing wasn't there, we had some free time to get there early. The picture on the left is kinda hard to see unless you click in since my camera phone doesn't have an optical zoom. Takes good pictures though I think. Beats the heck out of my Treo in any case.

We did some browsing of the crafts and arts while we had some open time, but I didn't buy anything… some interesting stuff there though. I want a giant dragon fountain :(

Then there was the games. We braved the maze they have set up there. My sister beat me through. I think she cheated because she didn't take any wrong turns. Boo! Then she beat me at archery too. It wasn't my day for games it seems.

So that's it for the Renaissance festival. Oh yes…what was my other excuse? I mentioned two… Well, before and after the festival, I was a little busy because my sister had dropped off…

It was a really satisfying ending to the series, to me. But I'm going to leave it at that in case somebody stumbles onto this without having read it.

Vox Hunt: [this is random]

Show the most random photograph you have ever snapped.
Submitted by Xeyli.

I have two images for you because I couldn't decide which one to use.

First up, is the snow shovel. I don't know why I took a picture of my shovel, but it turned out pretty good in the end anyway.

The second image is of my keys. Again, no idea why I took this one…

All Tickets, All The Time

0

I have a couple of things here related to concert tickets. One good, one bad. First up…the bad.

The Dream Theater tickets I was holding on to for the August 20th show had a bit of an accident. They got a tad bit wet and stuck together, kinda ripping slightly and obscuring some of the ticket information. I noticed yesterday morning and was in almost a near panic because of it (since one of the tickets isn't mine). I called up the venue though and described the damage and they said it should be fine, and if it isn't we could visit the box office and they would straighten things out for us. Looking at the tickets now, the damage isn't that bad. You can still see all the relevant information on both tickets…just not in all the spots it was printed ;)

Second story, the good. The tickets went on sale for the October 18th Porcupine Tree show at The Egg in Albany. Second row. Woo! First time I've ever been in the first couple rows. I've been 8th row before, but second row is something else.

New Toy!

0

Today is an historic day. Well, sort of.

I finally was able to ditch my Treo! I now hold in my hand (well actually, it's on the table…but who's counting) a brand new Blackberry Curve.

Finally I can run my Treo over with heavy objects! Er…ok, nevermind, I traded it in for $100. But um, maybe somebody ELSE will roll over it.

Here's the story. I was trying to track down a Curve after a search of all the AT&T stores that I knew the location of turned up blank. Everybody said they were popular and everybody was out of stock.

So this morning I called up an authorized agent store (which I was trying to avoid, but…that turned out to be the wrong move) and asked if they carried the curve and if they had one in stock. They said they did, but they were going fast. They could, however, hold one for me. So I scooted down on my lunch break to pick up my Curve.

I'm really enjoying it so far. I like the interface, the form factor… The camera is pretty good too. See below:

Taken very quickly as the plane landed in front of my car on my way back to work with the curve. Pretty decent for a snapshot. And it was easy to use too.

I'm still playing around with it but two thumbs up so far.

QotD: True Saying

0

Which saying do you believe to be true, but just can't seem to follow?
Submitted by Maxvan.

The first thing that came to mind is "A penny saved is a penny earned"

It's true, but it's really hard to save those pennies…

QotD: My First Friend

0

Who is the very first friend you ever had?  Are you still in touch?

The first real friend I can remember at the moment was a kid by the name of James. I met him in my 5th grade class and we ended up being friends for a couple years until he moved away when I was in…I want to say, 6th or 7th grade. The only thing I can really remember about him was that he was really big into Football, and was an Oakland Raiders fan.

I also remember being really upset when he moved because I don't make friends very easily and he was really my only close-ish friend.

After that I met Josh, who I've mentioned on here before (the person who's aunt married my uncle). We were (good) friends right up through the last couple years of High School when our interests started to diverge (as they tend to do in High School/College). I lost touch with him during college.

Well, I did see him a few months ago working at the grocery store, but the conversation was…awkward to say the least.

That's Just…Messed Up

0

I finished watching Neon Genesis Evangelion last night…

I was warned that it was going to get very weird towards the end, but nothing could have prepared me for those last two episodes. Very…stream of consciousness, and very hard to follow. I really liked the series though and I'm probably going to pick up the boxed set at some point. I'm looking forward to seeing the End of Evangelion movie too, hopefully that ending makes a little more sense.

In other news, I found out that Porcupine Tree is going to be playing out in Albany in October. Woohoo! Too bad it's a Thursday and not on the weekend, but that's just a minor inconvenience.

Now if you excuse me…I need to go back to avoiding Harry Potter spoilers until I can read the book…

QotD: My Solo Getaway

Would you go on vacation by yourself, and if so where would you go?
Submitted by Sean & Stefan.

I don't think I'd go away on an extended trip by myself. I'd much rather just hang out at home. Maybe an overnight thing if the reasoning was good enough (like a concert or something).

I prefer going on long vacations with other people. It's a lot better going on a long car ride when you have people to talk to, and if something unexpected happens while you're out you've got people you know there who can help out.

Man, the past couple days have been completley devoid of stuff to talk about. Even todays QoTD is horrible (which is why I jumped backwards into the archives.) Not that having nothing to talk about is a bad thing…just…not very good if you're trying to blog.

Ol' One Eye…Where Are You??

0

I was just looking into my aquarium when I realized that I only seem to have 3 zebra danio's now instead of 4.

I used to have a fish with only one eye, which was dubbed Ol' One Eye fairly quickly on on in the fish keeping process. I can't find him anywhere. He used to hang up near the top, swimming in the currents up there, but I can't seem to find him anywhere now.

I did notice that he was kinda not moving quite as much as he had in the past…perhaps maybe he finally kicked the bucket. I figured he'd go first due to his missing eye. He's gone completley missing though. I checked all of the plants and under all the decorations…nothing.

Hope he turns up soon, one way or the other…

QotD: Little Known Facts

0

What are five things that most people don't know about you?
Submitted by mika.

  1. Just looking at me, you couldn't tell that I was into metal type music (like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, etc)
  2. I don't really like talking to people unless I know them well enough to gauge their reactions to stuff. This is a little known fact because I usually don't get to know people well, so I just come across as Shy.
  3. I have a scar on my stomach that was caused by an injury that happened while walking (More accurately running) through a door
  4. Some nights I can't go to sleep unless I'm listening to music. This habit of mine has gotten me into a little trouble since I tend to doze off now if I'm wearing my headphones, laying down and just trying to listen to some music.
  5. I played AYSO Soccer when I was really young for exactly one game after which I decided that sports really weren't my thing.
