If you’ll remember, last week I had some problems with iTunes 7 on my windows computer, so I devised a system of playing music and syncing with my new 80GB iPod which was rather complex. The final piece in that system arrived yesterday.

Just to recap, here’s the system. Since I need iTunes 7 in order to sync my iPod and I want to be able to play music while other programs are using my sound card, I moved my entire music collection to my MacBook Pro in OS X where iTunes is much less buggy right now.

I then ran a stereo cable from my headphone jack out to the line in on my Logitech speakers which worked reasonably well. But I’m a sound quality guy. I like having the best quality I can afford to have.

Reason #513 that I love my MacBook Pro. It has an optical output (and input actually) for sending out a digital audio signal. And my Audigy 2 has an optical input. So I figure might as well send the signal digitally so that there would be less interference.

So that’s what I’m doing now. I find it fun that I can have the optical cable almost plugged in and have the signal travel over the air into the cable if I have it lined up right. Mmm…fiber optics are fun!
