Caught In The Whirlwind
QotD: Reflecting on September 11th
What are your personal memories of September 11th?
I was in my car driving to school with the first plane hit. The radio show I was listening to at the time (Kinda your standard comedy bit show that was local to the area) suddenly turned dead serious as they had a TV on and were reporting on what they saw.
My english class (first class of the day) was in a computer lab, so I spent a portion of the period trying to view news websites that were swamped. I stopped a pair of people in the hall afterwords who were talking about it and asked what had happened. I went to my math class incredibly distracted. After that, out in the parking lot, I learned they were closing the campus for the day. Which was too bad since I didn’t have any other classes after that.
I went to work and didn’t get much accomplished (not sure if anyone did there really). I spent more time trying to refresh news websites than I actually did working.
That night I was glued to the TV set. I was also on an IRC channel with some people I really don’t hang out with much anymore (the channel was for the discussion of a tabletop strategy game called Battletech) and we alerted each other to the news coming in as it came in through various sources. I remember scares of wondering if there were more hijackers out there…there was a bomb scare in the empire state building…etc. Everything was all crazy.
I still get sad thinking about it. That day was a major eye opener for me and lead to me questioning a lot about who I was and what I believed in. A lot of deep thinking about the point of it all and things like that.
